The most successful team in European Championship history are oddly prone to a calamitous group stage, exiting this early in 2000 and 2004 and last topping their group when victorious at Euro 1996. Given that opponents Portugal have never before been eliminated in the first round and finished first in their group at the last four editions, Germany are far from certain to enjoy a winning start.

This stat suggests that even if Germany don't open the competition by claiming an immediate three points, they are still likely to be quickest off the mark in Lviv, against a team who fell behind in their last two European Championship fixtures. Germany better hope this trend is sustained as they have lost the last three tournament games in which they conceded first, falling to 1-0 defeats 15.014/1 in each.

This might appear to contradict the earlier advice, however it is worth noting that Germany have failed to win on two of the last three occasions that they fired three or more in a match - being held 3-3 by Ukraine last November and losing 3-5 to Switzerland last month. At least one team has scored three in all three 21st century meetings between these two, and all of those occurred at international tournaments.
