"Under Sam Allardyce, the Hammers have made a competent return to life in the Premier League with just one defeat from their opening five games."
Christian Crowther previews a few of Tuesday's Capital One Cup fixtures and offers some bets to consider...
West Ham v Wigan, Tuesday 19:45, Match Odds: West Ham 2.01/1, Wigan 4.131/10, The Draw 3.6553/20
West Ham were just a whisker away from making the final of this competition only two seasons ago, before agonisingly going out to eventual winners Birmingham in extra time in the second leg of their semi-final. Players such as Carlton Cole and Mark Noble will still be smarting from that defeat and will no doubt impart their desire to right those wrongs on the newer faces in the Irons squad. Under Sam Allardyce, the Hammers have made a competent return to life in the Premier League with just one defeat from their opening five games, with the Upton Park crowd yet to witness defeat - overseeing three wins from four games in all competitions. Contrastingly, Wigan have started in typically erratic fashion, losing three out of six.
Recommended Bet: Back West Ham to beat Wigan @ 2.01/1
MK Dons v Sunderland, Tuesday 19:45, Match Odds: MK Dons 3.6553/20, Sunderland 2.26/5, The Draw 3.55/2
Steven Fletcher is looking every bit the £14 million man since his move to the Stadium of Light, capping another assured display with the opener against West Ham on Saturday - a fourth goal in three games for the Scot. However, the accuracy of Fletcher's boots cannot mask the fact that the Mackems have only recorded one win so far this season, against Morecambe in this competition, drawing the other four matches in the Premier League. The problem is that Fletcher's supporting cast simply haven't contributed any goals besides James McClean's brace in this cup. This has resulted in four of their five games turning up less than 2.5 goals, a streak which is mirrored by their League One hosts.
Recommended Bet: Back under 2.5 goals @ 2.01/1
Preston v Middlesbrough, Tuesday 19:45, Match Odds: Preston 2.8415/8, Middlesbrough 2.68/5, The Draw 3.5551/20
Preston's renaissance under Graham Westley is taking a little longer to materialise than most fans of the Lilywhites would have liked. They have struggled for consistency in a season which has so far been characterised by disappointing losses after convincing wins. Saturday's 3-1 defeat to Walsall provides the perfect example, after thrashing Hartlepool 5-0 just four days earlier. Tony Mowbray's Middlesbrough will arrive at Deepdale full of confidence, following a 2-1 win away at then-Championship leaders Blackburn. Boro have won six of their nine matches so far, including two away ones in this competition and should have too much for North End.
Recommended Bet: Back Middlesbrough to beat Preston @ 2.68/5
