The West Indies national cricket team are full members of the International Cricket Council (ICC). They make up a confederation of 15 Caribbean countries and are governed by the West Indies Cricket Board.

Success has come in the World Cup; they won the tournament in 1975 and 1979. They have also lifted the ICC World Twenty20 trophy, back in 2012.
A West Indies represented cricket team traces back to the 1890s when they came up against an English side.
In 1928, the West Indies became the fourth team to be granted Test status. Karl Nunes was appointed as their first captain of the Test team, and he led the team up until 1930.
From the mid-1970s, they established themselves as one of the strongest teams in the world in both formats of the game. Players such as Sir Garfield Sobers, Michael Holding and Sir Viv Richards shined for them as they proved extremely difficult to beat.
In the 1990s, batsman Brian Larza broke numerous individual records while playing for the confederation. One of those includes the highest score in Test match cricket, which came in 2004 against England when he hit 400 not out.
The Windies were the first ever winners of the World Cup in 1975. It was held in England and featured eight teams split up into two groups of four.
West Indies won all three of their Group B games to go into the semi-finals as pool winners. They then defeated New Zealand in a low scoring game before getting the better of Australia in the final.
Four years later they were able to defend their crown when the second edition also took place in England once again. As winners of Group B, the Windies met Pakistan in the last four and won by four wickets. In the final they met the hosts England but were too strong for Three Lions as the home side fell well short of their total of 287 from 50 overs.
Their run in finals came to an end in 1983 as India stopped them from their third consecutive World Cup as they had to settle for runners-up on that occasion.
Apart from a win in the 2004 ICC Champions Trophy, it wasn't until 2012 when they won another world crown. They were successful in the ICC World Twenty20 tournament, which was held in Sri Lanka. Wins came over Australia and Sri Lanka in the knockout stages.
