The first four matches of the tournament will be played at Arnos Vale. Whether those games are damp squibs may well depend on the toss bias. Although there have been only 11 results at the venue in T20, nine of those have been won by the side that batted first.

The study sample is relatively small (all internationals, too) but it is not unreasonable to factor the flip into your betting, particularly when there is going to be very little to choose between these teams. And that goes for all games at this ground.

Early match odds have Jamaica being lined up as favourites. We're not sure that's correct. Jamaica are a new team with plenty to do in terms of creating an identity and way of playing. The Kingsmen could well take time to bed in, not least because they have a fair clutch of players who might be considered to be inconsistent. Rovman Powell, for example, is their marquee capture. Likewise Usman Khan. Andre Russell is on the wane these days and has a single tops win across both disciplines in two years.

Antigua, now in their third edition, appear to be making progress and are taken to have a strong run with a motivated Alzarri Joseph potentially doing plenty with the ball. The Falcons, then, would represent early value if odds-against is available with the toss bias onside. The market rarely reacts to a toss bias.

Trinbago Knight Riders, the holders, have an early chance to assert their superiority with a contest against the Patriots, who have been consistently poor. In the last two tournaments they have finished second-bottom and bottom.

They are exactly the type of team which need a toss bias or conditions to help bridge the gap. They will at least get that here and at significant odds-against one perhaps cannot rule out them making favourite status if they were to bat first and TKR were caught a little cold.

The Pats are reliant on two players to deliver; Johnson Charles with the bat and Jason Holder as an all-rounder. Charles has a 27% win rate on top bat in the last two editions. Holder is far from a shoddy wager on the same market actually, winning at just shy of 19% over the same study period.

We are hopeful that TKR unleash Justin Greaves in his usual opening slot. Alex Hales and Colin Munro are rivals for the role. Greaves was a consistent rungetter and was denied the chance last season to cement himself as one of the best openers because of injury. If Hales is picked, the balance for TKR will be all wrong. They need to go with Matt Breetzke in the middle order instead.

With the ball Usman Tariq should be a key member. He has won at even money on top bowler. But whether he is available for game one remains to be seen as he is still with Phoenix in The Hundred. Another spinner of note is Waqar Salamkheil for Pats. He is far from a mug wager on the top wickets market with a 30% rate in two years.
