Since their inception, the side have played at the historic Oval Stadium. With a capacity of 23,500 the Oval is the fourth biggest cricket ground in Britain. It was also home to the first ever England international Test match in 1880, and traditionally is the location of the final Test match of the English season. The stadium was also the venue for the FA Cup final between 1874 and 1892 and staged England's first ever football match against Scotland in 1870. Due to naming rights the stadium is currently named the Kia Oval.

After Yorkshire, Surrey are the most successful County Cricket side. They have won 18 County Championships, the most recent of those coming back in 2002, and also lay claim to seven unofficial Champion County trophies, the predecessor to the County Championship. In limited overs cricket the side have won one FP Trophy, one Clydesdale Bank 40 trophy, one NatWest Pro40 title, three Benson and Hedges Cups and one Twenty20 Cup.

Surrey have had three notable periods of dominance. The first came in the 1850s when they won their seven Champion County trophies, then came 1887-1895 when they won eight titles, and 1952 to 1958 saw them win seven consecutive titles. In 1955 they won a record 23 matches, a record that can never be bettered, as counties have played fewer than 23 matches in a season since 1993.

Jack Hobbs spent 29 years at the club (1905-1934), during which time he made a record 598 appearances, scoring a record 43,554 runs and hitting a record 144 centuries. The record wicket taker is Tom Richardson, who took 1,775 during the latter stages of the 19th century. He also holds the record for five wicket hauls, with 169 of them in total.
The current side includes South Africa captain Graeme Smith, as well as his international team mate Hashim Amla. They also have England stars Kevin Pieterson and Chris Tremlett. Other notable players include Alec Stewart, Ricky Ponting, Mark Butcher and Graham Thorpe.

The county engage in a rivalry with Middlesex, due to their proximity with one another, and their overlapping in today's Greater London. The clash draws the biggest home attendance for both sides. In total there have been 256 first-class matches between the two, and Surrey lead the way with 89 wins to Middlesex's 74.
