He has played as an all-rounder in all three formats of the game for the Australia national team.

Watson started his first-class career at Tasmania where he signed a professional contract in 2001. His performances for them led to him being selected for Australia in a One Day International in South Africa.

After three years at the club, he signed for his home state of Queensland in 2004 where he played domestic cricket all the way through to 2009.

In order to gain some experience outside Australia, the Queensland man took part in the County Championship in England in 2005 for Hampshire. This helped him to familiarise himself with conditions outside his home country.

2005 was a big year for Watson as he made his Test debut for Australia against Pakistan in the Third Test of the home series. He was included as a fifth bowler in Sydney.
In 2009 Watson moved up the order to open the batting for Australia in Test cricket. He formed a successful partnership with Simon Katich.

The Queensland born all-rounder was awarded the Allan Border Medal in 2010 and 2011. This is given to the Australian player of the year and he is only the second player in history to win it twice along with Ricky Ponting.

Despite Australia not winning the 2012 ICC World Twenty20, he finished the tournament as man of the series. He scored a total of 249 runs at an average of 49.80 with the bat, whilst he also took 11 wickets.

In 2013 he made his highest Test score in Australia's Fifth Test against England in their Ashes series defeat. He managed to score 176 before being dismissed at the Oval in London. That brought up his fourth Test century. His best figures with the ball came in 2011 against South Africa, where he finished with 5-17 in his side's win.

Watson took part in the Indian Premier League for the first time in 2008, signing for the Rajasthan Royals. He has played for the franchise every year since then and has twice been voted the IPL player of the season, a feat nobody else has achieved.

In 2009 the Australian moved to New South Wales where he currently plays domestic cricket. He also takes part in the Big Bash League in his home country in which he features for the Brisbane Heats.
