Sachin Tendaulkar

Sachin Tendulkar is a recently retired Indian cricketer, who is widely regarded as the greatest batsman of the modern generation, winning almost every award and prize in the game over an illustrious 24-year career.

Born on 24 April 1973, in Mumbai, Tendulkar took up cricket at 11-years-old, quickly rising up the ranks of the domestic game before becoming the youngest player to make his Test debut for India at the age of 16 years and 205 days and also the youngest player to debut for India in ODIs at the age of 16 years and 238 days. 

On India's tour to England in 1990, Tendulkar became the second youngest cricketer to score a Test century as he made 119 not out in the second Test at Old Trafford in Manchester. Since then, the batsman has gone on to become the only player to have scored a hundred international centuries, the first batsman to score a double century in an ODI, and the only player to score over 30,000 runs in international cricket, passing the 50,000 run mark in all forms cricket to become the first Indian to achieve that feat. 

Held in almost God-like stature in India, Tendulkar has been handed numerous awards by the Indian government throughout his career, including the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award, making him the youngest recipient to date and the first ever sportsperson to receive the award just hours after playing his last international match. 

Tendulkar finally ended his long wait to win the World Cup in 2011, winning the tournament for the first time in six appearances in the event and having previously been named "Player of the Tournament" in 2003. Tendulker ended his ODI career a year later, retiring from ODI cricket with an average of 44.83 from 463 appearances, scoring over 18,000 runs during that time. 

Tendulkar retired from Twenty20 cricket in October 2013, retiring from all forms of the game on 16 November 2013 after playing his 200th and final Test match, against the West Indies in Tendulkar's home city of Mumbai. Overall, Tendulkar played 664 international cricket matches during his career, scoring 34,357 run and cementing himself as one of the game's best ever batsmen. 

Despite scoring so many runs against opposing teams throughout his career, Tendulkar enjoyed an unrivalled level of popularity throughout the world. As loved for his warm personality as much as his talent with the bat, Tendulkar will go down in history as one of the greatest ever to play the game.
