The right-handed batsman occasionally played as a wicket-keeper and could bowl off-spin if required.

Dravid started his professional career at Karnataka in 1990. His first full season was in 1991/1992 though, where he hit two centuries during the campaign and averaged 63.3.

After impressing with the bat in domestic cricket for a good number of years, Dravid was called up to the India one-day squad in 1996. His debut came against Sri Lanka in the Singer Cup, which was held in Singapore. Although he only scored three runs in his innings, he took two catches during the game.

Later that year, the right-hander played Test cricket for the first time in India's Tour of England. That was the start of a very successful career in the five-day format.

During the 1999 World Cup, Dravid finished the tournament as the highest scoring batsman with a total of 461 runs. His side were unable to get out of the Super Six stage of the competition though.

The Indian had a spell in county cricket in England in 2000 with Kent. He signed as their overseas player to take part in domestic cricket outside India for the first time.

In 2004 Dravid was named the Player of the Year and the Test Player of the Year. That came after he had scored three double centuries during the previous season.  He was able to record a 200+ innings against Australia, New Zealand and Pakistan. In the series against Pakistan, he captained the side to victory. In the final Test he hit his highest Test match score with a knock of 270.

Dravid's international career came to an end after the 2011/2012 series against Australia. He finished with a Test average of 52.31. There were 36 centuries and 63 half-centuries in the 16 years during which he played Test cricket.

When the Indian Premier League was founded in 2008, Royal Challengers Bangalore purchased the India international during the auction. He spent three years with the franchise before signing for Rajasthan Royals in 2012.

On retiring from the game, Dravid ended with over 10,000 runs in one-day and Test cricket. Along with Sachin Tendulkar, he is one of only two men in history to score over 10,000 runs in both formats. He also has the record for the most catches from a non-wicket-keeper in Test cricket with 210.
