Dhoni made his ODI debut in December 2004 against Bangladesh, going on to play his first Test a year later against Sri Lanka. The wicket-keeper batsman replaced Rahul Dravid as ODI captain in 2007, leading India to the 2007 ICC World Twenty20, the CB Series of 2007-08, the 2010 Asia Cup, the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy. In the final of the 2011 World Cup, Dhoni scored 91 not out off just 79 balls to take India to victory after his team had been against the ropes, going on to earn the Man of the Match award.

Dhoni was named Test captain in 2008, going on to lead the Test side to series wins in New Zealand and West Indies, and then to winning the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2008, 2010 and 2013. Under Dhoni's captaincy, the Indian team reached the number one position for the first time in the ICC Test rankings in 2009. In 2013, India became the first team in over 40 years to whitewash Australia in a Test series, with Dhoni recording a career-best innings of 224 in Chennai.

Following India's ICC Champions Trophy triumph in 2013, Dhoni became the first captain to win each one of the ICC trophies, cementing himself as one of India's most successful skippers. The wicket-keeper also captained the Chennai Super Kings to the IPL crown in 2010, along with the 2010 Champions League Twenty20.

While Dhoni was initially thought of as predominantly a batsman who could keep wicket, the Indian skipper has become one of the most reliable wicketkeepers in international cricket, taking over 200 catches in both Test and ODI cricket. Dhoni is the only captain in the ODI cricket to score a century while batting at number 7, achieving the feat in 2012 against Pakistan in Chennai.
