The left-hander is a batsman who can also play as a wicket-keeper. He is regarded as one of the best players ever to have come out of Sri Lanka.

Not only did he represent his county in Test and one-day cricket, but he was captain from 2009 until 2011.

Sangakkara is the first player to achieve four consecutive innings of 150 runs or more in Test cricket. In the one day game for Sri Lanka, he also has the highest number of dismissals as a keeper, with 382.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) awarded Sangakkara the ODI Cricketer of the Year award in 2011. He was able to lead his side to the World Cup final where they were beaten by India.

A year later he was named as one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year after a solid campaign in all formats.

The left-hand batsman made his first-class debut for Nondescripts in 1997. He was recalled into the Sri Lanka one-day squad for a series against Pakistan at the age of just 22. Later that month, he featured in the Test team against South Africa.

Sangakkara has been able to make eight double centuries so far in his Test career. That is the third highest number behind Donald Bradman and Brian Lara. His top score is 287, achieved against South Africa in July 2006. He was involved in the world record partnership of 624 in a match along with Mahela Jayawardene in Colombo. That came after the visitors were bowled out for 169. Sri Lanka reached 756 before retiring with five wickets in hand. They then dismissed their opponents for 434 to score by an innings and 153 runs.

The Sri Lankan has played in the Indian Premier League (IPL) since its launch in 2008. He was purchased by Kings XI Punjab in 2008 before spending three years with the franchise. They reached the semi-final in the first season.

In 2011, Sangakkara moved to the Deccan Chargers. He was captain of the side but they were unable to get out of the group stage in his two years with them.
The wicket keeper's current club in the IPL is the Sunrisers Hyderabad. He signed with them in 2013 when they reached the play-offs in his first season with the team.
