The South African has the best bowling strike rate of all time in the Test format of those who have bowled at least 10,000 deliveries. He was also the fastest man from his country to reach 100 wickets in Test matches until that record was broken by V.D Philander.

Steyn made his first-class debut for Northerns in 2003 when he played just two matches in his opening season as a professional. The club merged with Easterns the following year to form the Titans.

After some good performances at domestic level, the fast bowler was called up to the South African Test squad to host England in December 2004.

His opening One Day International came for the Africa XI on August 17, 2005 against an Asia XI. He then played for South Africa in a 50-overs game for the first time in January 2006 when they hosted Australia.

From 2009-2012, Steyn established himself as the number one ranked Test bowler in the world. Against Australia in the 2008/2009 series, he picked up his third ten-wicket haul of his career for South Africa in the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. Following the first innings, he ended with figures of 5-87, while the second time the home side were at the crease he helped himself to 5-67.

The Titans man also contributed with the bat at the MCG as he recorded his highest Test match score with 76 to earn himself the man of the match award.

In 2013, Steyn ended a Test match against Pakistan at the Wanderers with career best figures of 11--60. In the first innings he took six wickets and went for just eight runs during his spell.

Since 2007, the South African bowler has been an integral part of the Indian Premier League in the Twenty20 format of the game. He played for the Royal Challengers Bangalore until 2010. Then in 2011 he was purchased by the Deccan Chargers for $1.2 million in an auction. Sunrisers Hyderabad replaced Deccan in the IPL in 2013 and the South African was retained by the new franchise.

Steyn also takes part in the Big Bash in Australia. He made his debut in that competition in 2012 for Brisbane Heat.
