Newmarket Betting: The Tuddenham Mill Feilden Stakes (Listed)
Exclusive Timeform insight into one of today's big races
A seven-race card kicks off Newmarket's 2008 season with a bang. Kandahar Run heads the ratings for the Listed Feilden Stakes, run over one mile and a furlong. Henry Cecil's charge was most progressive as a juvenile, winning a maiden at Doncaster before showing useful form when winning a minor event on the Rowley Mile on his final start. Despite still showing some immaturity and even allowing the shortcoming in the opposition, Kandahar Run's latter success was impressive, isolated with the race sewn up and hanging right in the final furlong, defeating Ghetto by three and a half lengths. There's every chance he'll develop into a pattern-race performer before the season is out and a successful reappearance looks a big possibility.
Campanologist will attempt to give Mark Johnston his third winner in five runnings of this race following the successes of Gold History in 2004 and Atlantic Waves in 2006. Campanologist improved on his reappearance when winning a competitive minor event for 3-y-os at Kempton, racing prominently from halfway and asserting readily to defeat Whitcombe Minister by a length and three-quarters (Pegasus Again well below form in fifth). Although he'll possibly need to improve again to win this, Campanologist appeals as the type to remain on the upgrade for a while longer yet.
Poet is a typically lightly-raced 3-y-o of Aidan O'Brien's open to further improvement. He was workmanlike when winning an ordinary maiden at the Curragh on his reappearance, making all and pulling out plenty when challenged in the final furlong, defeating smart prospect Kargali by half a length. He's certainly worth his place in the line-up, and wouldn't be a shock winner.
Redolent showed much improved form on his final two starts in 2007, finishing in the frame behind Ibn Khaldun in the Autumn Stakes and Thewayyouare in the Criterium International. He possibly wasn't fully fit on his reappearance, finishing just a respectable third to Sharp Nephew at Lingfield having disputed the running as usual for much of the race. While that run should have brought him on, it's doubtful whether he'll stay beyond a mile and others look more appealing.
The line-up is completed by Yahrab, who although like the majority of his rivals boasts a similarly progressive profile as a 2-y-o, was particularly disappointing on both starts at Nad Al Sheba earlier this year and should probably only be watched at present.
