Waffle sets the standard here. The form of his second to Amour Propre on his final start has been well advertised subsequently, but that was a standout effort on his part and it would come as no surprise if Aldermoor and City Dancer were to improve past him.

Aldermoor is a lightly-raced, progressive sprinter who won twice last year. He confirmed that promise on his seasonal debut when fourth in a competitive handicap at Newmarket and has more to offer, particularly back at five-furlongs.

Brenin Taran is a five furlong specialist and was impressive when winning at Thirsk. Something must have gone wrong on his latest outing but he faces a very stiff task at the weights, anyway.

Fault is an exposed sprinter who made a winning start for this stable in a handicap at Kempton on his reappearance. It was possible he had excuses next time out at Chester as he was poorly drawn but he will do well to bounce back in this competitive race.

Rievaulx World is an exuberant front-runner who put up a good effort when taking on older horses in the Palace House Stakes last time and has realistic claims back in this grade.

Thunderous Mood has progressed well since winning his maiden at York last year, finishing runner-up in a minor event at Ripon. He should be suited by the trip and ground but does need to improve again.

Waffle looked nothing special for much of last year, before improving appreciably when second to Amour Propre on his final outing. There is a chance he may have been flattered by that but the winner has boosted the form since.

Anglezarke was second in a Group two at Doncaster last year on soft ground and also has form on fast ground but she has a bit to find with Waffle on their most recent piece of form.

City Dancer
looked a useful prospect when landing a four-runner minor event last season and has shaped well both starts this year. She has more to offer and can play a part here.

This looks a good opportunity for Vertigo On Course, a fast-finishing third at Southwell last week. Young Dottie's success last month is working out well and she also makes appeal, while each-way players could do worse than side with Toolentidhaar....

Despite being the senior citizen of the party, Mister Nous retains plenty of ability, and having won five times in France appears ready to open his British account. The Rainbow Hunter could be more deadly now switched to handicaps and looks a big threat to the selection, with Strategic Plan rated third best....

Jim Tango is open to improvement over fences, and this looks to be Miss Pross' easiest task for some time, but the likeable Bamby gets the nod with conditions to suit back over fences....

Timeform Daily: Thursday, Southwell, 15:20

The two handicap debutants could be the ones to focus on here, with Ambrogina favoured more than Seamster. Knightfire will have to settle for a place again....
