John McDermott goes through the card for Day 2 of the festival at Tramore.
Ruby Walsh is the leading National Hunt jockey at Tramore over the past four seasons with an impressive 21% strike rate. Despite scoring a blank on yesterday's opening day of the Tramore Summer Festival, he looks a sure thing to add to his Tramore tally this evening.
The opening event, the Beat 102/103 Maiden Hurdle is not one for wading in on with a very short priced favourite trying to get off the mark at the twelfth attempt. Sebadee has form on soft ground but at [2.9] won't be enticing me into a bet. At a push I'd have a win and place bet on Wings of Dawn. At her best she was rated 64 on the flat and ran well at Cork in testing conditions last week. David Marnane and Kevin Coleman had a winner yesterday and the team are running well so 9.8 looks value for a sporting bet.
Advice: Wings of Dawn to win and place
Despite four runs already in August, Royal Approval makes sound appeal to land a third successive win for trainer John McConnell in the O'Neill's Bar Hurdle. Tramore's undulations shouldn't pose any problems given he won at the equally hilly Downpatrick last weekend and duly followed this up with a win on the flat at Balinrobe on Monday. Market leader, The Spoonplayer is likely to stay popular with punters so wait until close to the off to get better that the current [2.6] on offer for Royal Approval.
Advice: Royal Approval to win
Dani California can get back to winning ways in the Richard Power Handicap Hurdle and provide the Mullins / Walsh duo with their first winner of the evening. Recent performances on the flat and over hurdles have been disappointing but a drop in class, course and distance form and a liking for soft ground makes her the obvious choice. The [3.1] on offer will be matched by me if you don't do it so get on this one early.
Advice: Dani California to win
Havetoavit is taken to land a quick fire double for Ruby in the www.thetote.com Handicap Hurdle. A switch in yards often provides the key to an early success and the new yard being that of Willie Mullins makes it all the better. Switching back to hurdles should be taken positively and Ruby is the man to cajole him back to winning ways. The [3.9] currently available looks skimpy enough with anything greater than 4.2 looking about right.
Advice: Havetoavit to win
The Ernst & Young Handicap Chase looks a wide open contest with plenty having a shout. Dan George looks too short at [3.9] to lug top weight around two miles and six and so another option is sought. Brideswell Boy has been off the track for almost a year but I'm willing to take a chance that he comes here fit and well. He has previous winning form at Tramore and with his jockey claiming five pounds; he looks the value at 10.0
Advice: Brideswell Boy to win and place
Two recent seconds by Professor Muldoon on soft ground looks the strongest form for the beginners chase and could provide Kevin Coleman with another festival winner. A close eye is to be kept on Dan George in the previous race as if he runs well; the money will come for Professor Muldoon as they filled the first two placings at Roscommon earlier in August. [3.8] is plenty short for Liam Burke's charge but is sure to be well supported by locals on track.
Advice: Professor Muldoon to win
Elaine's Twinkle is taken to send punters home happy by taking the final race, the Waterford and Tramore Supporters Club INH Flat Race. Her first outing on yielding ground at Roscommon promised more and second to Drama Miss Queen at Limerick a month ago showed decent progression. A month off should have her ready for this evening and a visit to the winners enclosure.
Advice: Elaine's Twinkle to win
