Southwell, 18.30 - Back How's The Guvnor @ 9/25.50
Trainer Jenny Candlish enjoyed her best ever calendar year on the flat last year with 40 domestic winners and it could have been even better had her Staffordshire yard not been forced to quarantine for a month in November when a case of Strangles was discovered.
That was a frustrating end to a stellar 2025 for Candlish who sent out stable star Alzahir to score six times in a campaign which culminated in a French Listed success last October.
The star sprinter was sold for 160,000gns at Newmarket's Horses In Training Sales to race in the Middle East this winter so the hunt is on for a replacement, but in the meantime Candlish and partner Alan O'Keefe will be striving to match last year's number and How's The Guvnor could signal a further upturn in fortunes with success in this winnable handicap.
Lewisham Grove was a welcome winner for the Basford operation over hurdles at Newcastle last week and the selection made an encouraging return from his enforced break at Wolverhampton when he was overhauled late on by R P McMurphy, a rival who appears revitalised by the addition of cheekpieces.
The duo broke clear of their rivals in the straight and, although it was a Class 6 affair, it appeared a fairly deep event of its type so the form could be endorsed today with Candlish's five-year-old perhaps better suited by the drop back to a mile.

Southwell, 19.00 - Back Dollar's Dream @ 1/12.00
Dollar's Dream has looked something of a slow burner in his career to date, but there were enough positive signs from his latest start at Newcastle to recommend him as a bet in this low-grade staying affair.
The presence of a James Owen stable switcher and a well-handicapped Ian Williams stayer may make the market for Phil Kirby's lightly-raced five-year-old who posted a clear career best when narrowly failing to resist the late charge of the likeable Tarbat Ness at Newcastle last week.
A light drop back in trip on this galloping track could be the ideal equation for the selection and with Rossa Ryan booked, the half-brother to seven winners ought to go well here.
His trainer clearly thins so as Dollar's Dream is also entered at today's venue on Friday.
