Lingfield, 15.00 - Back Bucksy Des Epeires @ 5/42.25

Today's fare certainly fits the 'calm before the storm' bracket with two modest domestic jumps cards on the menu.

Finding decent bets isn't easy, but Bucksy Des Epeires should strip fitter for his Fontwell comeback and make an impact in this Class 3 handicap which has drawn just five participants despite the attractive prize money on offer.

It is hard to evaluate whether the Venetia Williams stable is in top form, but with four winners in the past fortnight at the time writing, they have certainly emerged from their autumn slumber.

Positive performances from the likes of Djelo and Zertakt have set the tone for a better period for the Herefordshire handler who would also have been heartened to see stable favourite L'Homme Presse make an encouraging comeback at Cheltenham last weekend.

Bucksy Des Epeires hasn't taken a lot of racing since being sourced from France a couple of winters ago, but he did make a winning debut for the stable at this venue over hurdles and the form of his Fontwell comeback over fences in October has taken a couple of boosts since with the winner, Twinjets, landing a competitive Newbury handicap since.

The selection was made favourite to win that event, but ran like a lot of his stablemates at the time, finishing 12 lengths adrift of the winner having looked in need of the outing physically.

Dropped 2lb by the assessor to 123, the six-year-old has enjoyed an eight-week break since which should be no detriment to his chance given he has won following absences of 394 and 234 days.

Consistency hasn't been Bucksy Des Epeires' friend in his career to date, but this looks a good opportunity to kick-start his season and, in a race where there doesn't look a multitude of front-runners, he could be difficult to reel in if his rider can find a nice rhythm in front.
