Musselburgh, 14.20 - Back Teddy Blue @ 9/25.50

Adjectives such as mercurial and enigmatic could have been coined for Teddy Blue and punters siding with Harry Derham's eight-year-old must be aware he can be a real Jekyll and Hyde character.

When he consents, the selection is a very talented chaser and, with all three of his wins achieved going right-handed since being from Gary Moore, conditions should be ideal here.

Teddy Blue steps back up in trip to contest this event and that might suit him as it has looked on occasion that he finds everything happening a shade quickly over the minimum trip.

While he is yet to confirm today's distance is to his liking, he hit the line strongly enough over two-and-a-quarter miles at Kempton last March and the handicappers rated that victory as a career-best performance.

He is clearly no good thing in this event, but a 70-day break is reported to have worked the oracle and he goes well fresh as was evidenced by his impressive Ascot comeback.

Sandown, 15.10 - Back Henri The Second @ 11/43.75

If Paul Nicholls could request the perfect ground for Henri The Second then borderline unraceable would be his chosen terrain.

Form figures at Sandown of 1P44122 suggest the selection should be in the mix again this afternoon in a race he was runner-up in 12 months ago, while most of his career best efforts have also been recorded in fields of six to twelve runners where his strike rate reads an impressive four wins from seven starts.

The stars are aligning for a positive showing from Henri The Second who looked much happier back over hurdles at this venue on ground sounder than ideal earlier this month, while the two-and-a-half mile trip probably didn't maximise his staying qualities.

Sandown, 15.10 - Back Red Dirt Road @ 7/18.00

The Sportsbook have shrewdly ducked the price of Red Dirt Road, preferring to price last year's winner conservatively on his return to action following a sizeable absence.

The mud-loving nine-year-old hasn't been seen since running at Uttoxeter on Midlands National day last year, but it appears significant that connections have targeted him at this event, 12 months on from an eight-length rout of Henri The Second which was a statement performance.

Whether he is capable of ever reaching those heights again is open to question, especially as he is 6lb higher than when successful in last year's renewal.

However this will be just his 10th career start under rules and it will be interesting to see which way he goes in the market.

In the hope he is straight for his comeback, he is worth backing as a saver alongside the main selection.

Musselburgh, 15.37 - Back Magna Victor @ SP

Shropshire handler Alastair Ralph has proved pretty adept at targeting the Musselburgh prize money at this meeting in recent years - Magna Sam and Welsh Charger have both won a brace of races at this fixture in the last three seasons and bid for hat-tricks this weekend - and Magna Victor may add to those gains in this handicap.

The selection enjoyed a sighter of today's venue pre Christmas when he made a winning start to his handicap career courtesy of a narrow defeat of Gemini Man who reopposes here on 2lb better terms.

That neck victory doesn't really tell the whole story of the race as the son of Telescope traveled strongly throughout, but just looked raw and lacking in concentration when he hit the front.

Once organised by Jack Hogan after the last, Magna Victor rallied well to see off the runner-up and win a shade cosily and I'm hopeful that he will have learned from the experience and produce a more rounded performance six weeks on.

Each-way all-weather double could pay dividends

It is the second weekend of Betfair's terrific "Bet £10 Get £10 on racing multiples" promotion so, with the National Hunt taken care off with the column above, an each-way double on a couple of Lingfield sprinters could pay dividends.

First up is Completely Random (14.50) who could enjoy the likelihood of strong pace and arrive late on the scene in the Listed Kachy Stakes. An hour later Rossa Ryan is reunited with Diomed Spirit (15.55) in the 0-85 handicap with the form of his latest run boosted by the fifth across the line scoring last week, while the fourth home went close at Southwell next time out.
