Conditions at Newbury are likely to be pretty demanding, but that could play to the strengths of Close Combat who could regain his best form encountering deep ground for the first time this season.
Two respectable, if unspectacular, outings in handicaps this term have seen the five-year-old's mark slip to 109 (from 113) and with Murray Dodd's claim reducing his rating still further, there is a case for saying the selection is becoming nicely handicapped.
His sole course win to date, achieved on heavy ground at Exeter last January, saw Nigel Hawke's gelding gamely beat the 121-rated Mythical Moon, relishing the attritional conditions more than most to shed his maiden tag.
Hopefully, those two handicap runs have helped to condition the selection and, considering all that he did was gallop and stay at Exeter and previously at Chepstow, he could be worth chancing now that he tackles today's trip for the first time.

It is fair to say that siding with Spendmore Lane is not a bet for the feint-hearted as her career record currently stands at 14 starts without success.
However, the selection has shown enough with the eye shields applied to suggest a race of this nature could be within her grasp, especially if she can reproduce her latest effort at Lingfield.
Trapped on the outside from a combination of a wide draw and her normal slow start, the daughter of Mayson was pushed out into lane eight as the field turned for home, yet still finished off to good effect to register the fastest finishing speed percentage in the race as she tried to run down the in-form Beauzon.
Apprentice Conor Whiteley retains the ride and should know his mount a little better this time round and it may be a case of 15th time lucky for Spendmore Lane with fewer rivals and less traffic to negotiate here.
