"My colt comes here on the back of a career-best in the Queen’s Vase, when he was just touched off by an improver, so he has plenty to recommend him. He is obviously entitled to go very close..."
Betfair ambassador Ryan Moore provides exclusive insight on his seven runners on day one of Newmarkey's July Festival including Zechariah who is entitled to go close after his performance at Royal Ascot...
Should give good account of herself
13:20 - Canadiansmokeshow
I rode the 2yo Daytona Lady to win on her debut for the stable earlier in the season and hopefully this filly can give a good account of herself. She is by US Navy Flag, who I obviously rode to Group 1 success, out of a decent mare, and she is half-sister to some very smart horses, among them last season's Grade 1 winner Going Global. So the pedigree is there.
Entitled to go very close
13:50 - Zechariah
There isn't much between a few of these ratings-wise but my colt comes here on the back of a career-best in the Queen's Vase, when he was just touched off by an improver, so he has plenty to recommend him. He is obviously entitled to go very close after that run.
Can compete in hot renewal
14:25 - Little Big Bear
We expected him to go close in the Windsor Castle and he delivered. I thought he did very well to win from his low draw there, and obviously the runner-up franked the form when winning well at Sandown last weekend. This looks a pretty hot renewal - with Coventry runner-up Persian Force, in particular, a serious rival - but the step back up in trip won't be an issue for my colt and he should be very competitive. It'll take some winning this, though.
Everything in place for strong run
15:00 - Deodar
I rode him to finish second to Flaming Rib at Doncaster last season and that form obviously reads very well. I suppose he could be viewed as being a little disappointing over 7f here last time but he is back to 6f, with blinkers on, and he has been dropped to a mark of 93, too. That looks fair.
Has his chance if he bounces back
15:35 - Living Legend
He beat Yibir in the Jockey Club Stakes earlier in the season and clearly has chances on that run, even if he has picked up a 3lb penalty for that Group 2 win. He needs to bounce back after failing to beat a horse home on his last two starts, but they were in good races, so he has his chance at his best, even if he looks up against it, in truth, giving weight away all round.
Curragh run is cause for optimism
16:10 - The Acropolis
Mighty Ulysses is the one to beat in here but it was good to see The Acropolis run so well last time. He obviously had very tough tasks in the French Guineas and Derby and he ran a career-best when just touched off at the Curragh. I suspect he needs to progress again but that Curragh run gives us cause for optimism.
In with a chance in open race
16:40 - Evocative Spark
I haven't ridden him yet but he appeared to beat a couple of well-fancied horses at Chester last time, and a 3lb rise looks fair enough to me. He certainly has his chance in an open-looking handicap.
