Some later rides won't mind testing ground
He has form in testing conditions if the rain really gets into the ground and he comes into the race on the back of a career-best second in the Beresford Stakes last time. That form is probably as good as anything else's in here, along with the likes of Ancient Wisdom, so he looks set to go very well.
There is a lot more rain around on Friday so we have to keep an eye on that, but there is no doubting that City Of Troy is one hugely talented colt. Don't get me wrong, you have to respect a few in here, and the likes of Iberian are proven in deep ground if it gets that bad, but none can approach the form he showed in winning the Superlative Stakes in a very good time and a reproduction of that performance will see him very hard to beat here. He is simply a very exciting colt.
He is probably a bit short in the betting considering the competitiveness of the race, but he clearly has a leading chance. He was a good Flat horse when with John Gosden and he finished a decent sixth in the Ascot Stakes last season, and warmed up for this with a spin on the level at Killarney in August.
But obviously the main focus of his chance is his hurdling form and the fact that a 157-rated performer in that sphere can race off a mark of 96 here. More rain won't harm his chances as some of his best National Hunt form has come in very testing ground.
Arabian Crown looks the one to beat but my colt improved a good deal for his debut effort when winning for me at the Curragh last time and similar progression would put him right in the frame here. He won over 7f last time but I like him going up to 1m2f, even though his pedigree suggests it is not certain to suit. He shaped as if it would be okay for him when he ran over a mile on his debut.
Several have chances in this but Raadobarg will love all the rain that falls and he ran well behind Chindit last time , so he has a fair shot at this, stepping up to 1m1f. He operates well in heavy ground if it comes to that.
He has run well on all of his three starts but he probably ran his best race yet when third at Naas last time. The handicapper thought so as he has gone up to a mark of 89 now, but hopefully he can still be competitive though, as with a few in here, this will be the deepest ground he has faced.
I haven't ridden her before but she comes here in good form, she wasn't beaten far off a mark of 103 in the Ayr Gold Cup last time, and she is another who will welcome all the rain that falls from now on.
