Paul Nicholls 2021-22 Season Preview: Runner by Runner Guide to my Hurdlers

Betfair ambassador Paul Nicholls discusses his hurdlers with the new season ahead

Betfair ambassador Paul Nicholls has plenty of hurdlers within his ranks this year and he exclusively discusses each one in detail.

"Stage Star won on his debut and then stepped up to finish second to Knappers Hill in a Listed race at Ascot before again showing lots of promise when a close third behind the same horse at Aintree."

He was a star for us last season, winning on all four starts, impressing each time on his way to landing the Grade 1 Juvenile Hurdle at Aintree.

He is going to make a cracking chaser in time but needs minding and looking after so will probably stay hurdling this year though nothing is set in stone. He will start off in the Fighting Fifth and we will map out a programme from there.

Life can be quite hard for second season hurdlers but Monmiral is very talented and wants a trip so the race that looks made for him is the two and a half mile Grade 1 Hurdle at Aintree in April.

We have had to be patient with Flemenstide who needed time to mature but could come into his own this season over hurdles. He looked very good when winning his bumper at Exeter and I've put a line through his poor display at Ayr where all eight of our horses totally underperformed. To this day I don't know why they all blew out.

He was bought to replace Good Ball who we sadly lost over the summer. Sonigino won in battling style from the front on his second start at Auteuil in June. He is an exciting horse who should do well over hurdles before going chasing next season.

Paso Doble

AGE: 4yo
NH FORM: 31-
Official Rating: 129
EARNINGS: £24,991

He is a lovely type who won twice on the flat for Jim Bolger. He finished third in the Adonis Hurdle on his debut for us at Kempton before breaking his duck at the same course in May. A horse of huge potential he has been gelded and enjoyed a nice holiday. He could start at Chepstow this weekend or wait for Kempton two weeks later.

Knappers Hill

AGE: 5yo
NH FORM: 111-
Official Rating: N/A
EARNINGS: £32,062

He could go to Chepstow as he did last year when he won on his debut in a canter before completing a hat trick in much stronger company at Ascot and then Aintree. Knappers Hill is a talented horse who doesn't want the ground too soft so he has done plenty and is ready to go. He is exciting and has the speed for two miles.

Mr Glass

AGE: 5yo
NH FORM: 311-
Official Rating: N/A
EARNINGS: £5,857

He is a handsome type who made his mark last season winning his bumpers impressively at Wetherby and Haydock. He shapes like a superb jumper in his schooling sessions and looks an exciting prospect over hurdles for this season.

Stage Star

AGE: 5yo
NH FORM: 123-
Official Rating: N/A
EARNINGS: £9,515

We had twelve individual bumper winners last season and Stage Star was one of them to shine. He is a lovely horse out of Sparky May who was a classy race mare. Stage Star won on his debut and then stepped up to finish second to Knappers Hill in a Listed race at Ascot before again showing lots of promise when a close third behind the same horse at Aintree. He looks one to follow.
