The Grade 2 Haldon Gold Cup Handicap Chase is one of the highlights of the opening few weeks of the jumps season and this year's renewal has a fascinating look to it, with the promising Kalif Du Berlais heading both the betting and the weights.
Betfair ambassador Paul Nicholls' charge developed into one of the leading novice chasers last season, winning three times, including the Grade 1 Maghull at Aintree on his final start. He created a big impression with how he jumped last term but faces no easy task conceding weight all round on this return.
The temptation is to pass on him at a short enough price and concentrate on one who is starting to look well handicapped.
Martator has a good record fresh, and he was twice a winner at Ascot last autumn from marks of 134 and 140 (completing a five-timer that spanned two seasons). He then faced a hike in the weights and his form rather tailed off later (hit a peak BHA mark of 151), but he's back down to 141 now and could well be primed to take advantage of some leniency from the handicapper.
The early signs from the Venetia Williams team are good too, as she sent out Djelo to win the Charlie Hall at Wetherby last week.

The ITV cameras pay a rare visit to one of the most picturesque courses in the country as we get coverage of a couple of races from Hexham on Friday, and I'm hoping the unexposed Monsieur Le Fuzz can give a good account in this 2m 4f handicap hurdle.
This Irish point runner-up has taken a few starts to put it all together for the Rebecca Menzies yard but he responded well to the fitting of first-time cheekpieces when winning at Ayr back in March and has been raised just 3lb for that success.
The waters are deeper in this company, but the selection looks the type who can go on progressing as he gains in experience. He still looked a bit novicey last time but dug deep to get the job done and may well have strengthened up with a summer on his back.
Rioja Alta is another who comes into this on the back of a last-time-out success and he may well emerge as the biggest threat, though whether he quite has the upside of Monsieur Le Fuzz remains to be seen.

Dan Skelton has a made a typically fast start to the new season, notching 13 winners in the last fortnight or so, and he can take this 3m handicap chase with one who hasn't been in his care too long.
Theonewedreamof made her stable debut at Chepstow last month having previously been trained by Gavin Cromwell in Ireland and she shaped really well on the back of a six-month break. She largely jumped well in the main on the way to a runner-up finish and it was a big plus that she showed an ability to handle quicker conditions well having previously looked to relish testing ground.
The form of that Chepstow race was given a boost too, with the fourth coming out and winning at Fakenham last week.
Theonewedreamof is still only six and her new trainer should be able to coax plenty more out of her.
