We saw Exchange drama in the opening race at Chepstow

The 'unofficial' start to the NH season saw carnage on the Betfair Exchange as the winner hit the ceiling price of 1000.0999/1 in-running, while the runner-up traded at 1.011/100. Mike Norman has the details...

  • High drama in Chepstow's Veterans' Chase

  • Winner hit the maximum price of 1000.0999/1 in-running

  • Runner-up matched for over £3k at 1.011/100

If it's high drama that you like in your horse racing then it's a very welcome return for the National Hunt season after the Betfair Exchange witnessed carnage during Chepstow's opening race.

Regarded by many as the 'unofficial' start to the new jumps season, Chepstow commenced with a 3m Veterans' Chase at 13:35, a race that produced a remarkable finish.

Exchange carnage on 'unofficial' start to NH season

Good Boy Bobby was backed into 9/43.25 favouritism just before the off, ahead of Aye Right at 9/25.50, and the duo traded blows throughout the contest before the latter stamped his authority on the race in the home straight.

Aye Right jumped well out in front and bounded clear under his jockey Ryan Mania, establishing a 10-length lead after the last.

Trading at the minimum price of 1.011/100 on the Betfair Exchange, the 10-year-old began to tire in the closing stages and Good Boy Bobby - who at one point looked as though he would weaken out of the frame - began to get his second wind under Sam Twiston-Davies.

Matched at the ceiling price of 1000.0, Good Boy Bobby stormed home under a power-packed ride to chin Aye Right just a few strides from the line.

It was a remarkable contest that shows exactly how volatile in-running horse racing markets can be on the Betfair Exchange.

We might not get a race like it for the remainder of the jumps season, but if we don't then nobody can argue that we didn't get off to a dramatic start!

And with the commencement of Chepstow's two-day meeting, we welcome back Betfair Ambassador Paul Nicholls who has runner previews for the Welsh venue, stable tours and his thoughts on the season ahead, plus much more, all on his dedicated page.
