Alan Thompson had a winner yesterday and he is looking to back that up with two more selections from Sedgfield and Chelmsford...
"a winner though on his only run over this course and distance and is now 19lbs below his last winning mark"
The Happy Chappy is an out and out stayer
The rain has been falling pretty much constantly in the North East and this trip is going to take some getting. Sarah Humphrey's runs her nine-year-old dough stayer The Happy Chappy in this and it could be perfect for him.
He ran into a spot of bother just as the race started to heat up at last time out at Uttoxeter and that cost him valuable ground, over a slightly shorter trip than today, that he wasn't able to make up. He was a winner though on his only run over this course and distance and is now 19lbs below his last winning mark. He produced a solid enough return after 214 day break when second over this trip at Uttoxeter from this mark, a repeat of that should be good enough.
Another thorough stayer is Achill Road Boy for Stuart Coltherd, who relishes the softer ground; three of his four wins have come on heavy or soft. He also recorded his career best Racing Post Rating over this course and distance when he finished second here in 2019. I don't think he will have enough to beat The Happy Chappy but he could easily fill a place at 13/2.
Red Poppy will find this easier today
Red Poppy has done nothing but improve in each of her three starts to date, William Haggas looks to have found an easier assignment for his three-year-old filly this time. She ran in a hot handicap last time at Newbury, finishing third, where the winner was sent off favourite in a listed race next time out and the second has come out and won since. Also, that was a small field and she had to do all the work up front on her own, this should map out better for her from the same mark and that run suggests that this mark is certainly withing her capabilities in the right race.
The current market favourite is Motamayiz for Roger Varian and she could prove tough to beat, the yard are in red hot form and this consistent three-year-old is sure to be on the premises again. He was a little unfortunate when runner up over this trip at Yarmouth last month when beaten by a decent type. I am sure he will be there or thereabouts again today but I think Tom Marquand and Red Poppy will be too good.
