Thursday's Most Backed: Follow the Leader with 11/1 into 11/2 gamble at Newcastle

Previous Kelso winner has been well supported

  • Recent Wetherby third caught the eye
  • Won at Kelso back in March
  • Extra Place Special race on Betfair Sportsbook

Today's most backed horse is Limerick Leader in the 14:13 2m Handicap Hurdle at Newcastle. Having opened as big as 12.011/1, the five-year-old is now 6.511/2 to be first past the post.

Rose Dobbin's Limerick Leader appeared to return to form when last seen at Wetherby, finishing third over 2m5f, over eight lengths behind the eventual winner.

However, what has caught the Betfair punters attention is the way in which he travelled throughout, and when making headway three furlongs from home, he was denied a clear run and had to switch in order to compete.

The drop back in trip will suit, as Limerick Leader won at Kelso over today's trip back in March.

If Rose Dobbin's horse is to prevail this afternoon, he will have to beat current favourite Lucky Lover Boy 3.02/1, who has won three of his last five races, which includes two seconds - and a win over course and distance last time out.

However, the reason as to why the seven-year-old isn't shorter in the market is largely to do with the fact he is unproven on soft ground. He may well be in form, but this is a completely different ball game this afternoon.

Next in the market is Lock Down Luke 5.04/1, who has two recent victories to his name at Kelso, over 2m7f and 2m.

However, elsewhere he's failed to win at Cartmel, Musselburgh and Newcastle, which is why Betfair punters have looked elsewhere in the market.

Limerick Leader's last run certainly caught the eye and he could be running back into form, which is why punters are taking a chance on him today.

Note that this race is an Extra Place Special, if you want to have an each way swing on today's horse.
