Sandown, 13:40 - Writer: Qar can improve on debut performance

Thi Qar has been entered in Group races on the back of her encouraging debut second at Newmarket and is taken to improve past the more-established Tall Trees.

Money for one or more of the newcomers would also bring them into the reckoning, with Flower Show one who makes obvious appeal given Charlie Appleby's excellent 2-y-o strike-rate.

Goodwood, 14:00 - Alan Dudman: Forty years in the waiting

Forty Years On has been seen just once this season, on good to soft ground at Newbury with a victory back in June.

One suspects that his trainer George Scott has had to wait for some rain as the overall profile looks more towards a horse who appreciates cut, in keeping with his sire Mayson.

It was a fairly devastating performance on the straight track over 7f at Newbury as he coasted along out the back and cut through the pack with a sharp turn of foot - running the final 3f far quicker than any other rival, and it was the start of that burst at the 3f marker when he produced the 11.08 second furlong.

With that speed, he should find himself at home at a track like Goodwood and it seems to be the feature of his performances as last term when so progressive he scooted away from a held up position with a fast final furlong.

Some rain will be most welcome for his chances and up to a mark of 96 will need a serious performance, but he was so impressive when last seen.

Sandown, 14:15 - Mark Milligan: Take Chief to boss rivals

This looks a competitive handicap on the surface, as you'd expect for the money on offer, but if there's one horse who has the potential to make a mockery of his mark it could well be Kokbastau.

Roger Varian's three-year-old has progressed rapidly in his first four starts and absolutely bolted up making his handicap debut at Kempton earlier this month.

That came in a race that wasn't particularly strongly run, yet Kokbastau was still able to quickly put five lengths between himself and the chasing pack once takin the lead 2f out, something that isn't easy to do off just modest early fractions.

The sharp turn of foot the selection showed there marked him out as a potential Group performer in the making, and though the handicapper hasn't missed him - he's been put up a stone for that win - such is the sharp upward curve the son of Wootton Bassett is on that I'm confident he can defy it.

That Kempton success came on the back of a more hard-fought win at Southwell, which showcased Kokbastau's ability to battle too when the situation demands and I'm excited to see this one take the next step up the ladder.

Goodwood, 14:35 - Katie Midwinter: Tony looks well-handicapped

Tony Montana isn't the most reliable either, as he has also struggled to finish in front recently, but he's another well-handicapped performer and could enjoy this step back up in distance in potentially slightly softer conditions.

He finished strongly over a mile-and-a-quarter here at the Goodwood Festival when last seen, running well under 7lb claiming Toby Moore at odds of 18/119.00 to finish a luckless fourth, having performed with some credit at Newbury and York in his previous outings this term, far from disgraced on either occasions.

Previously trained by Michael Bell, he was narrowly denied on the Knavesmire last season for his former trainer, and also finished second at 14/115.00 in a competitive 21-runner Curragh handicap from his current rating of 94. This assignment could suit perfectly and he may be worth keeping the faith in for Kevin Philippart De Foy.

Sandown, 14:50 - Timeform Verdict: Secret can remain unbeaten

A competitive Group 3. Secret Of Life has made rapid progress and is taken to make it 4-4 but there are a few potential big threats to her unbeaten record, namely Kon Tiki, Moon Target, who has been holding her own in Group 1s, Calendar Girl and So Regal.

Goodwood, 15:10 - Alan Dudman: Jolly looks a solid bet

The weather forecast if rain does hit Sussex, has made this a race a few would run from. But this is no time to retreat for Zavateri lovers and with so many holes elsewhere, the return to 1m in an easier race and with the weight pull is just too much of a pull to ignore.

He won at the track as a two-year-old and if good to soft he should be alright.

Sandown, 15:30 - Katie Midwinter: Alfred fancied for Group success

The best could be yet to come from Ed Walker-trained Alfred Wallace, who is more exposed than the main market principles but has been up against tough opposition already in his career, gaining valuable experience as well as Listed honours so far this season.

The son of Dubawi is out of talented Group One-winning mare Snow Lantern, who had soft ground form, and is from a wonderful family. He has already shaped with promise and is entitled to continue progressing. 

The chestnut colt could be capable of outrunning his odds in this 7f Group Three, and is worth considering in the hands of Kieran Shoemark having already proven himself at Stakes level.
