Saturday horse racing tips and insight

13:15 Cheltenham - Mark Milligan: Selection could scoot clear again

A former point winner, She Is For Me Boys made a seamless transition to the bigger obstacles having won her previous two starts over hurdles, jumping soundly and drawing clear of Ilovethenightlife on the run-in, with a subsequent winner giving substance to the form back in third.

The selection has been raised 7lb for that but still looks well treated given the manner in which she scooted clear and there should be plenty more to come.

13:50 Cheltenham - Paul Nicholls: Il Ridoto looks fantastic

He is heading back to his beloved Cheltenham one pound lower. It looked as though the ground was going to be soft and I have been worried about that all week but it has gone good to soft today and hopefully we will not get too much more rain. The more it dries out the better for Il Ridoto, he's a good ground horse who has bits and pieces of form on the soft but doesn't really like it.

What do you do? Leave him in his box and run him or wait and run and, if he gets beat, he comes down a few pounds. That's the story of his life really, but he is very well, worked great yesterday and looks fantastic, so I just hope the ground keeps drying up.

13:50 Cheltenham - Alan Dudman: Vincenzo can go one better

Well last week's 1-2-3 verdict got the second and third without the winner, but the victor I am hoping will be Vincenzo as I think he can improve again on his Paddy Power Gold Cup runner-up spot and is a pretty tough customer for one so young.

Jagwar is the class act but the stable isn't flying and it's his first run of the season so I want to keep him onside in terms of placing and Martator is very well treated and it could be that Venetia is running into some sort of form.

  • 1) Vincenzo

  • 2) Martator

  • 3) Jagwar

14:25 Cheltenham - Sam Turner: Back Gunsight Ridge to fire

There are plenty younger than Gunsight Ridge contesting this Class 2 handicap, but Olly Murphy's veteran chaser has shown in recent starts there is plenty of life in the old boy yet and he could outrun his odds here. The drop back to the minimum trip on easy ground looks ideal for the 10-year-old who showed up well on his comeback behind Eldorado Allen over two-and-a-half miles at the last meeting here in November.

A combination of a lack of fitness and the trip found out the selection late on as he faded after travelling with his usual zest, and the prospect of a genuine gallop in this event should suit a horse with a high cruising speed. There is a case for saying Gunsight Ridge is a slightly better horse right handed given he goes so well at Sandown, however he was in the process of giving Matata a proper race at this venue 12 months when tipping up and might give his younger rivals a fright here.

14:40 Doncaster - Katie Midwinter: It's worth keeping World of Fortunes onside

World Of Fortunes could be worth keeping onside as she bids to beat warm favourite Kateira in this Listed contest. She has 8lb to find on ratings with her older rival but has course-and-distance form in her favour and could pose a considerable threat under Jordan Gainford.

The seven-year-old was narrowly denied in a Listed Limerick contest when last seen, having recorded success in handicap company at Ballinrobe in her penultimate start. She was able to land Listed honours at this venue in March, adding to her previous Listed win at Limerick, and also recorded a four-length success at Listowel over Paggane, who has since considerably franked the form.

15:00 Cheltenham - Timeform:  John is no con job

As you would expect, there's plenty of potential on show so conceding weight all round won't be easy for Conman John but he created a very favourable impression when winning here in October. He therefore could well be up to the task, though They Call Me Hugo and Carlenrig seem sure to leave the bare form of their opening hurdles efforts behind.

15:17 Doncaster - Sam Turner: Back Willie to build on last run

Backing horses which catch the eye running through the line late can be a route for the poor house as they are invariably overbet next time, but we have a chance with the six-year-old Williethebuilder on Town Moor and the prospect of a strong gallop may see him run as well as he did at Windsor three weeks ago.

I counted at least two genuine front runners in Bowmore and Amancio in this field as well as a couple of 'pressers' in the likes of Washington and Malystic whose presence looks likely to keep the pace honest. That should suit the selection who finished off to good effect behind Hardy Du Seuil at a track which arguably looked on the short side and Doncaster's longer straight can see him go close.

15:35 Cheltenham - Katie Midwinter: Lagoon Nebula aims to remain unbeaten

Sporting a first-time hood on her return to Cheltenham, Andrew Kinirons-trained Lagoon Nebula warrants each-way consideration as she bids to remain unbeaten at the track. She recorded a surprise 28/129.00 success here in April and now runs from a 7lb higher rating of 115 with Sam Twiston-Davies taking the ride.

The four-year-old filly has run well on the Flat on a few occasions since, including when achieving a second-placed finish at Chester following her latest win, and, on her return over obstacles, she could be capable of making the frame. This is a step up in class but Lagoon Nebula is unexposed making only her fifth hurdling start, and the daughter of Ulysses has course form in her favour.
