Timeform on Tonyx

Equilateral - 13:40 Newbury

Equilateral isn't the most reliable and sometimes flatters to deceive, but he is a cut above these rivals at his best and looks to have been found a good opportunity. His second to Battaash in the King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot in June - a performance backed up by the clock - is the best form on offer, and excuses can be made for his subsequent defeats. He can take advantage of this drop in class.

Diocles of Rome - 16:30 Newbury

Diocles of Rome has had a light campaign so far, running only twice, but he has raised his game a notch from last season and arrives here on the back of a career-best effort. Diocles of Rome was an encouraging fifth at Doncaster on his reappearance last month and he confirmed that promise when finishing third at the same course last week. He found only a couple of progressive three-year-olds too strong on that occasion, and that looks like a solid piece of form. He has an obvious chance off the same mark.

Tonyx - 17:05 Newbury

Tonyx won both starts last season and, while she has failed to strike in three outings this term, she has caught the eye the last twice. She shaped nicely when fifth, beaten just over a length, in a mile-and-a-quarter handicap at Chester last month, staying on well in the style of a filly who would improve for a greater test of stamina. She left a similar impression at Haydock last time and ought to benefit from this step up to a mile and a half.
