Rhys Williams has analysed Thursday's racing and has a sole selection at Warwick.

Promising start to his career

Warwick 13:00: Flaming Ambition 1pt win 5/2

Horses that catch the attention of the stewards tend to not be missed by the market next time as everyone is focused on them and while that was the case with the initial market for this race last night, Flaming Ambition has now drifted to an attractive price.

He made a winning start to his career in a maiden point at Maisemore over 2m5f last season, quickening well turning the final bend to draw a few lengths clear of his nearest pursuer and never being in danger afterwards. The runner up is now rated 112 over hurdles while the well beaten fourth and fifth are now rated 103 and 110 respectively.

He has since joined Gary Hanmer and made an eyecatching start for his new yard over hurdles at Doncaster over 2m½f. He was held up at the back of the field from the off and was still there turning into the home straight. His jockey offered no encouragement on the run to 3 out as the leaders went clear and was only applying gentle pressure going to the last, at which point Flaming Ambition goes out of camera shot (maybe one day head-on replays will be available for all races). When he next appears in shot, he's finishing very strongly to be fourth.

Given how strongly he finished I expect that Flaming Ambition may have got close to the front pair had greater effort been asked for earlier in the home straight and that would have been despite being poorly positioned over a trip that was likely to be an inadequate test of stamina.

He now steps back up in trip to 2m5f and I'm hoping he will be ridden much handier, possibly tracking Another Mystery who is the likely front runner. I think Flaming Ambition has shown as much ability in those two runs as Benign Dictator has so far in his career and while there is a concern that they could hold him up again, I think he has a very good chance to get off the mark over hurdles this afternoon and any 2/1 or bigger appeals.
