- Shown promise on all three starts
- Could make the running back down in trip
- Rhys Williams thinks Kilfilum Woods is overpriced at Plumpton
Has shown promise on all three starts
Plumpton 14:10: Kilfilum Woods 1pt win 5/2
Kilfilum Woods ran into subsequent Persian War runner up Outlaw Peter on his hurdling debut at Kempton and with nothing of his quality in opposition today, I think he has a good chance to get off the mark.
He started his career in Irish points and showed ability on debut at Dromahane when finishing third behind Captain Broomfield and Forpaddytheplumber, the latter since a winner of a bumper and maiden hurdle for Donald McCain.
Kilfilum Woods was bought for £70,000 after that to join Paul Webber and showed promise on his first start for him in a bumper in testing ground at Huntingdon. He raced prominently from the off and was still going well in second turning the final bend but he couldn't pick up as well as his rivals in the deep ground and finished fifth.
He was back on good ground for his hurdling debut at Kempton over 2m5f and was the only one to put up any challenge to Outlaw Peter. The pair went clear of the rest after 3 out and Kilfilum Woods got upsides Outlaw Peter turning the final bend but once coming under pressure he couldn't go with that rival and was beaten eleven lengths in second.
I thought Kilfilum Woods still looked a bit inexperienced at Kempton and hopefully he's physically and mentally matured over the summer break.
The ability he's shown in all three starts suggests he could be capable of winning a race of this quality and hopefully now that he's down in trip and has hurdling experience, they will look to make the running with him and try to turn it into a good test at the trip.
There is a concern that he's not found as much late on as seemed likely in both starts under rules so he might be a weak finisher over any trip but I think he's a bit overpriced against opposition of this quality and any 9/4 or bigger appeals.
