Likely to be suited by sharper test than points
Haydock 13:35 Captain Broomfield 1pt win 6/1
Transfer Friendly heads the market for this novices' hurdle following a good performance in victory at Ffos Las last time but that was over 2m4f and I'm not convinced that he will be as suited by this sharper test today.
Jungle Jack is next in and he's two from two in his career but he will have to improve from the level that he ran to at Sedgefield now that he carries a penalty.
Georges Saint has run to a fairly good level in France over hurdles and fences and this ground will be no issue for him but I thought that stamina was his strong suit over there so he might only be seen at his best over further.
The opposite is the case for Captain Broomfield who looked in need of a sharper test when running in points and, while the ground is an unknown, I think he can improve on what he showed in points over this trip.
He was given a patient ride on debut and gradually made smooth headway going down the back straight for the final time. He jumped into a share of second at 2 out but was pushed along after and couldn't go with the front pair approaching the last, finishing 5½ lengths behind the winner in third.
He got off the mark next time at Dromahane where he was far more superior to the opposition than the margin of victory suggests. He cruised up on the outside to be one of a leading line of three turning into the home straight and went to the front with a good jump at three out.
He was still on the bridle while everything else was under strong pressure approaching two out and jumped that a length in front before being nudged along approaching the last to extend the lead a little further. Once on the run in, he came under stronger pressure to hold on from the late charge of Forpaddytheplumber.
The way that Captain Broomfield travelled into contention and then into the lead was very taking and suggested that he would likely follow his full brother, Captain Guinness, in being suited by more of a test of speed under rules.
The ground is an unknown for him and I expect that he will probably be at his best on quicker ground but the ability he showed in points suggests that he should be closer to the front pair in the market than is currently the case and any 11/2 or bigger appeals.
