Could improve plenty if jumping sharpens up
Cheltenham 17:05: Fennor Cross 1pt win 11/2
Twinjets and Hullnback both bring strong bumper form into this maiden hurdle and the market hasn't missed that while this race also features the rules debut of An Mhi, the horse whose defeat on debut led to the three horses who beat him being sold for £300,000+.
Fennor Cross was comfortably held by Hubrisko on hurdling debut at Galway but I think he has the potential to improve plenty on that today. His hurdling inexperience showed at various times but despite that, he was in touch with the leaders running into the dip. He was pushed along to make headway on the outside approaching 2 out when he got a bump from The Last Mardi which caused Fennor Cross to swerve violently left. He lost momentum and about five lengths as a result and dropped off the leading group of four but ran on well late on to finish third.
While he wouldn't have beaten Hubrisko, he would have finished much closer without the incident prior to 2 out. It was encouraging that his jumping late on was much better so hopefully his jumping will be much sharper throughout the race today and the rain could see the ground turn in his favour by the time of this race.
It might be that he's not quite got the class of the front pair but I think he should be closer to them in the market given the ability he's shown on the flat and over hurdles and any 5/1 or bigger appeals.
Looked type to improve with time on debut
Cheltenham 17:05: Emotional Memories 0.5pt win 150/1
At a huge price in the same race, I can't let Emotional Memories go unbacked after he showed some promise on debut in a bumper at Huntingdon.
He raced a shade keenly early on in a prominent position and then raced greenly on a few occasions on the final circuit. Despite that, he was still in second turning the final bend before gradually fading away under a hands and heels ride late on to finish fifth.
Physically he looked the type who would improve with time and his inexperience showed at times during the race so he could step forward from that today on his hurdling debut.
It may be that he's simply not up to this level and will be more at home in a maiden/novice hurdle away from the big tracks or in handicaps in the long run but I think his price underplays his ability and any 66/1 or bigger appeals.
