Rhys Williams struck with a 12/1 winner yesterday and has two selections today at Sligo...
"The runner up from that race has won a bumper since while the fourth and seventh have both won over hurdles since to give the form a solid look to it."
Opportunity to gain a tactical advantage
This is a weak amateur riders maiden hurdle and I think Ambitious Getaway could be capable of running better than her big price suggests if she can bounce back to the level she showed on debut.
That debut came in an Irish point at Dromahane where she took the field along for most of the race before being headed between the last two fences. She was still only a couple of lengths down at the last but faded on the run in and was then prematurely eased and caught on the line for second place.
The winner of that race was subsequently sold for £75,000 while the runner up has won a bumper since and the fourth is now rated 101 over hurdles.
Ambitious Getaway's two performances since have been far less encouraging as she was beaten a long way out on her next start and quickly dropped away late on when racing in a hood at Ballingarry.
It might be that she's had a problem that means she will continue on the decline but I think this tight track will suit her and a return to the front running tactics used on debut would help her cause in a race where there's not a huge amount of early pace. Any 25/1 or bigger appeals.
Far more promising run at Listowel
Minella Crooner is the odds-on favourite in the bumper and I expect that he will be the best of these in the long term but the only slight worry today is that he won his point through stamina rather than speed so a small field bumper around Sligo might not see him to best effect.
At a much bigger price I think Gekkota's chance has been overlooked by the market. He ran awfully when a selection in this column at Ballinrobe on rules debut but his run at Listowel last time was far more in line with what I expected from him at Ballinrobe.
He raced a bit further back than midfield before starting to make some headway going down the back straight for the final time. He was still travelling well in a close seventh turning into the home straight but he couldn't put in a serious challenge to the leaders and finished in sixth.
The runner up from that race has won a bumper since while the fourth and seventh have both won over hurdles since to give the form a solid look to it.
The obvious worry today is the same thing that didn't help his chance in the closing stages at Listowel and that's the inexperience of his jockey but Gekkota looks overpriced on the basis of that performance at Listowel and any 12/1 or bigger appeals.
