Rhys Williams' Racing Tips: French import to spring a surprise on British debut

Our racing expert has one selection on Friday

Rhys Williams has analysed Friday's racing and has a sole selection at Uttoxeter.

"She has since been bought to join Gary Moore and I expect she will be a much shorter price for her British debut than Heritier currently is."

Showed ability in AQPS flat races

Uttoxeter 13:55: Heritier 1pt e/w 22/1

The market hasn't missed the chance of Anyharminasking who showed plenty of speed in his point and looks likely to be suited by this sharp test but I think it's overlooked the chance of another horse making his first start in Britain.

Heritier started his career in France with Emmanuel Clayeux and made his debut over hurdles at Pau towards the end of last year. He showed greenness that day before dropping away quickly at the end of the back straight and was pulled up.

He was held up and never put into contention on his next start over fences at Lignieres before his attentions were moved away from jumping to run in two AQPS flat races and he showed far more ability.

There was a significant change of tactics at Lyon in the first of those two races as despite being slowly away from the stalls, he was soon allowed to stride on in front and he never relinquished the lead, powering clear in the closing stages.

The same tactics were used again on his final start at Vichy, albeit in a more aggressive manner than at Lyon. He continued to hold the lead until headed around a furlong out by Houka d'Oudairies and was beaten 1¾ lengths by that rival. She has since been bought to join Gary Moore and I expect she will be a much shorter price for her British debut than Heritier currently is.

Physically Heritier looks a long term prospect who will likely eventually be at his best over fences and I expect his disappointing performances on the first two starts of his career were due to physical weakness and the ground being softer than ideal.

Given that he made the running in both AQPS flat races I'm hopeful that they will ride him prominently again today on his first start for Oliver Greenall and if he can transfer the ability that he showed on his final two starts in France to hurdling then I think he's got a much better chance than his price suggests.

There is a concern that some horses look very good in AQPS flat races and then don't run to anywhere near the level expected over obstacles and he has run poorly twice when jumping so that is a worry here but the price more than compensates for that concern and any 14/1 or bigger appeals.
