Rhys Williams thinks Sea Squared is overpriced at Kempton
Potential to build on promise shown
Kempton 18:30: Sea Squared 0.5pt e/w 33/1
Newcomers dominate the front of the market in division two of the mile novice race at Kempton this evening but it's one with experience who has the potential to improve who appeals at a big price.
Sea Squared made his debut over seven furlongs at Salisbury in June where his inexperience showed. He was a bit slowly away and had to briefly be shaken along and was then tightened for room, causing him to drop to the back of the field. He continued to race greenly and was switched widest to make a challenge before fading out of contention late on.
He was stepped up to a mile next time at Haydock where the race didn't pan out to suit. Having broken quite well, he was restrained to race towards the back of the field. He started to make headway on the outside with around 3½ furlongs to go but in a steadily run race, the leaders were able to quicken on again and he couldn't go with them late on, finishing seventh.
As well as being poorly positioned given the pace that day, Sea Squared was running at a time when Alan King's horses weren't performing well at all so he has the potential to improve plenty this evening, particularly if they change tactics. Given he has experience, they should be looking to make use of that tonight and ride him much handier to try to gain an edge over any newcomers that might be green.
It might be that the newcomers will simply have too much class for him or that Sea Squared will show his true ability in handicaps next season but I think he's overpriced given the potential for improvement and any 22/1 or bigger appeals.
