  • Hammer Dan is overpriced at Taunton

Lost plenty of ground and momentum at fences

Taunton 16:45: Rock House 1pt win 13/2

The early market has taken care of all of the value in Saladins Son's price in the bumper at Taunton but I think another couple of ex-pointers making their rules debut make some appeal at the current prices.

Rock House made a winning debut at Chaddesley Corbett last season despite not jumping too well at various stages. Having been held up, he was slow at the roadside fence on the final circuit and got in tight to the first down the back which allowed Galassian to go a few lengths clear.

Rock House went out to the right at the next two fences but was travelling strongly leaving the back straight and James King had to take a pull to avoid clipping heels with Galassian on the far bend.

On the run to 3 out, he sent Rock House up the inside and he quickened well on the uphill run to hit the front entering the home straight. He went a few lengths clear with ease and looked the likely winner when Galassian came down at 2 out, leaving Rock House well clear.

The manner in which he quickened up the hill was quite taking and given the amount of ground and momentum lost at fences along the way, this was a promising debut. He was also reported as being weak to the point that connections were thinking of turning him away for the season so there could be plenty of physical progression to come too on his debut for Dan Skelton.

Ground conditions will be much softer today but I'm hopeful that Rock House will be able to handle them and any 6/1 or bigger appeals.

Showed necessary speed for a bumper

Taunton 16:45: Hammer Dan 1pt win 11/1

Hammer Dan is a recent acquisition to David Pipe's yard following a promising debut in defeat at Comea. He was held up and travelled strongly at the back of the field before being asked to make some progress after jumping 3 out.

On the long run to 2 out, he quickened smartly in between rivals to jump that fence about half a length behind the leader but the leader then came across him on the bend which caused Hammer Dan's momentum to be checked slightly.

He came under a bit stronger pressure in the home straight and ran green before an awkward landing at the last cost him all chance and he finished second.

The speed that he showed between 3 and 2 out and the manner in which he travelled through the race suggests that a bumper will suit him and he can be ridden handier over this trip.

He's another who will be facing slightly softer conditions but I'm hopeful he will handle them and his experience over quite a few of his rivals can be put to good use. Any 9/1 or bigger appeals.
