Today's most backed horse is a surprising one, being a 10-race maiden who flopped last time on ground that could be similar today. What do the punters know?
We head to Pontefract to find today's most backed horse, and unlike most horses that feature in this column, there's very little evidence to suggest why it's being supported.
The race in question is the 17:10 at Pontefract where Churchill Bay has been backed heavily, from 14/1 down to his current quote of 5/1.
Clive Cox's 4yo has shown only glimpses of form in his 10-race career to date with arguably his two best career efforts coming over today's trip (6f) when finishing runner-up, both on ground described as Good to Firm.
One of those performances came just three runs back on Newmarket's July course, and the form of that race would give him a strong chance in today's contest, so perhaps that what punters are latching on to.
The concern is that Churchill Bay has since flopped on Soft ground along with being well beaten on three previous tries on Good ground, so with plenty of rain forecast for later today in Pontefract (ground is currently Good) the 4yo gelding is unlikely to get his ideal underfoot condtions.
But punters clearly feel that the ground won't be an issue, and with Cox being in decent form - four winners in the last fortnight - Churchill Bay is being well supported to get his nose in front at the 11th time of asking later today.
