"...this looks a good opening..."
Timeform on The Vollan
12:00 - Now that Timoshenko is a non runner, this looks cherry ripe for useful chaser SOME CHAOS (6) to open his account over hurdles, especially as his main rival on form Cool Destination has to prove his well-being after 10 months off.
12:30 - COULONCES (2) improved on her hurdling debut when second at Southwell last time, seeming well suited by the drop to two miles, and with her Flat form strongly suggesting that shouldn't prove her limit, she receives the vote. Get In Robin is a winning pointer with a good NH pedigree so is bred to come into her own now jumping, Winfola and Misstree Song are others to consider.
13:00 - This race has cut up and with that in mind it could be worth chancing chasing debutant THE VOLLAN (1), who is a two-time winner over hurdles and represents a yard that are among the winners. A good-topped gelding, he has the physique to prove at least as good in this sphere, and this looks a good opening. Oscar Nomination shaped well on his debut over fences last time but races from 4 lb out of the handicap.
13:35 - There may be more to come from SOLDIER TO FOLLOW (10) now faced with a stiffer test and pitched into a handicap for the first time in this sphere. His latest effort at Huntingdon represented a step in the right direction and this opening mark looks a fair one. Percy Street arrives on the back of a couple of solid efforts but bigger threats may be posed by Garo de Juilley and Authorizo.
14:05 - GRAY DAY (4) could prove the answer in a trappy handicap as he can boast a course and distance win and his reappearance third at Uttoxeter is proving solid form. He has fallen in the weights and is entitled to strip fitter for his recent run. His Dream isn't the most straightforward but arrives in a good vein of form so must enter calculations, while Milan of Crystal can have a say too if fully tuned up for her return.
14:35 - The handicapper has been rather magnanimous where JOLY MAKER (5) is concerned, dropping the six-year-old another 2 lb following what was an encouraging effort back from a break at Southwell. He is now 3 lb lower than for his breakthrough success there last October and this step back up in trip should be in his favour. Armattiekan is also on a potentially handy mark and is next best ahead of Scartare.
15:05 - VOCALISER (3) was rated in the 120s a couple of years back so looks dangerously well handicapped on this first run for Olly Murphy. He has joined a yard that do very well with such types and it is encouraging that he has been strong in the market this morning. Do You Know What could fare better over fences now stepping back up to 2½m and can provide the main threat ahead of Grand Coureur.
15:35 - Preference is for COOL COUNTRY (6), who left his previous form well behind when runner-up on chase debut here last month and is entitled to build on that. He jumped well in the main (hi three out) and travelled smoothly, but didn't get the clearest of runs on the home turn. This lightly-raced sort should prove better for that experience and is preferred to Iconic Hero and Tim Rocco.
16:05 - LE BOULEVARDIER (4) sets a fair standard on his placed efforts at Southwell and can open his account if carrying on the good work. Newcomer Wellntyne could be the danger.
