Expect a mighty run from Lucinda's Thunder
Back Mighty Thunder each-way @ 12/1 in the 14:50 at Chepstow
We got a pretty good run out of Cash To Ash to finish second in the Lincolnshire National yesterday, a stoic effort in testing ground at a BSP of 13.45 - hitting a low of 2.3211/8 in-running. And we are sticking with the marathon theme again with the Welsh feature on Monday.
Last year's winner Secret Reprieve was 11/2 last night on the Sportsbook, but he hasn't been seen since taking this in some style 12 months ago, while Native River will be sadly robbed of a send-off from the Chepstow faithful as the race will be behind closed doors. We salute him.
However, for the bet, the 12/1 on Lucinda Russell's Mighty Thunder looks a cracking each-way bet, and this is also an Extra Place Special on the Sportsbook.
He went from strength to strength last term as a staying chaser - and took the Scottish Grand National from 144. A deserved success too as he was chinned late in the Midlands National, and he hit a low of 1.511/2 in-running in defeat.
The step up to extreme distances suited him and there's every chance he could be an even better model this term. Russell has said he has endless stamina, and won in the mud in a slog to land the Edinburgh National last term.
I like his chances and he should be spot on after a good prep run last time.
Widdow Maker makes the cut before Whisky
Back The Widdow Maker each-way @ 10/1 in the 15:40 at Kempton
Not so long ago, the festive races were the domain of trainer Colin Tizzard, but his lack of a real star has seen him fall behind the likes of Nicky Henderson and Paul Nicholls and backing anything from the Venn Farm team at the moment comes with a caveat, as the stable aren't firing at all with a record of 0-22 in the last two weeks and a last winner on the 3rd December.
That will at least give us price at 10/1 on The Widdow Maker - who is sure to handle the soft ground at Kempton. In fact, he seems best with it testing. He shaded it for the second bet of the day ahead of Evan Williams' Golden Whisky in the 13:05 at Chepstow.
He was progressive last term winning twice at Taunton (including once on heavy), but disappointed on his final start at Aintree.
The hurdler bounced back on his seasonal bow to win a 0-130 at Kempton from the front - making it a true test by stretching the field in a relentless display of galloping on good ground. A 7lb hike not be enough to stop him with a rise in class today, but it could be a case of "catch me if you can" under Rex Dingle, and he looks overpriced at 10/1. We also have the Extra Place Special to help with our each-way double that pays 142/1.
