Gentleman de Mai - 12:35 Ayr
Gentleman de Mai is a staying chaser of the future and shaped encouragingly in the circumstances when fifth on his reappearance at Kelso a few weeks ago.
He was almost forced into handicaps after just one run over hurdles 13 months previously and lacked the necessary experience, as well as pace, in a race where they didn't go much of a gallop early on. He was doing his best work on the run-in even after taking a strong hold, finishing with running left around eight lengths behind the winner.
The way Gentleman de Mai ran at Kelso suggests he should have a bigger effort in the locker when the emphasis is more on stamina and a BHA mark of 103 is unlikely to prove beyond him another day.
NEXT BEST
Bak Rocky - 14:40 Ayr
Bak Rocky is the type to make a better chaser and there was plenty to like about his debut effort in this sphere at Kelso last month, staying on strongly to pass the post only two and a quarter lengths behind the winner.
He is entitled to improve with that run under his belt - his first after six months off and wind surgery - and the extra distance today will certainly play to his strengths.
Crucially, Bak Rocky is only 1 lb higher in the weights than last time and seems destined to play a leading role.
EACH-WAY
Captain Quint - 13:40 Ayr
Captain Quint looked a good prospect when making a successful chasing debut at Hexham on his penultimate outing, going clear on the home turn and always doing enough from there to land the spoils by a length and a half.
Turned out quickly after unseating his rider at the first at Newcastle on Saturday, he remains totally unexposed and deserves another chance to prove that he is still one step ahead of the handicapper from a BHA mark of 120, with this longer trip promising to suit if the stamina in his pedigree is anything to go by.
