York - 15:35 - Back Real Dream each-way, six places @ 7/18.00

York's big meeting of the year climaxes with the 1m 6f Sky Bet Ebor (15:35) itself on Saturday, and this has the potential to be one of the best renewals in recent years.

The obvious starting point is the highly-progressive Sweet William, who's won his last three starts and could well be open to even more improvement.

Versatile as regards ground, John & Thady Gosden's four-year-old son of Sea The Stars will likely be plying his trade in pattern races sooner rather than later, and is surely still well handicapped off 99, including the 4lb penalty he incurred for winning at Goodwood last time.

However, at around 10/34.33 in a 22-runner handicap, the value simply isn't there and the race looks ripe for an each-way alternative, with six places available on the Sportsbook.

Sir Michael Stoute's Real Dream possesses a similar profile to the favourite, but is available at more than twice the price, and he ought to give a very good account under Ryan Moore, who could be set for a profitable day on the Knavesmire.

The son of Lope De Vega returned from a breathing operation to win on seasonal debut at Kempton in May and was then far from disgraced when third in a much deeper race at this track over 1m 4f later that month.

He took the step up to this trip in his stride at Ascot last time, proving well suited by the increased stamina test as he came home over four lengths clear of Crescent Lake.

The selection is still low mileage, and while I'd have preferred him to be drawn a touch lower (he's in stall 22), a high draw has proven no barrier to success in this race in the past, and we only have to go back 12 months to find Trawlerman taking the contest from stall 20.

York - 14:25 - Back Denmark each-way, four places @ 7/18.00

The 1m 6f Sky Bet Melrose Handicap (14:25) is essentially an Ebor for three-year-olds, and while this year's renewal hasn't attracted the biggest field, it's chock-full of promising staying types.

William Haggas goes into the race double-handed, and it's his Lordship who's been attracting all the money of late, which is no surprise given he's won his last three races.

However, this is a deeper race again and he's gone up a total of 20lb since starting out handicapping in the spring.

He could well progress again, but he'll need to, and there's little juice left in his price.

The one I like is Aidan O'Brien's Denmark, who was on the Classic trail at the start of the season, making his only 2023 start when disappointing in the Group 3 Ballysax at Leopardstown.

He's obviously had an issue or two as we haven't seen him since then, but the marked step up in trip should play right into the hands of one bred to stay well, and the first-time blinkers could well eke out some improvement.

Denmark still holds plenty of pattern-race entries, which isn't unusual given where he's trained, but I'd be surprised if connections set out this season expecting him to be just a handicapper and a mark of 97 may well underestimate him.

As an added insurance, we've got four places to help us out from an each-way perspective on the Sportsbook.

Back Nostrum 13:50 and Kinross 15:00 in a Sportsbook multiple @ 4/15.00

That's it for Saturday's each-way selections, but there are a couple of solid horses running on the card who are worth combining in a win-only double, where we can take advantage of the Sportsbook's bet £5 get £5 (T&C's here) multiples offer.

I was disappointed Nostrum couldn't get the job done at Goodwood last time, as I think this is a top-class horse in the making, and it could be that a combination of being a bit keen and the holding ground just blunted him a touch.

Expect him to get back to winning ways under Ryan Moore in the opening Group 3 1m 1f Strensall Stakes at 13:50.

Kinross is a classy 7f specialist and he can prove a cut above his opposition in the Group 2 City Of York Stakes, a race he also won last season.

That was one of four successes for Ralph Beckett's charge in 2022 and he's a proper Group 1 horse at this sort of trip, something that can't really be levelled at his opponents here.

Frankie Dettori knows this six-year-old really well and guided Kinross to success in the Lennox at Goodwood last time, a race the pair finished runner-up in before following up in this contest last year.

At what is expected to be Dettori's final Ebor meeting, he can go out in style on this son of Kingman.
