Trainer Karl Burke has a good chance with a fast filly in the opening Lowther

Makanah ran well and earned a place for Alan Dudman yesterday and he returns with his York Day Two selections for Thursday...

  • Alan had a 29.15563/20 placed runner yesterday

  • Queen Mary third appeals in the Lowther

  • Cox to add to his 2yo tally with Dragon

York - 13:50 - Back Beautiful Diamond

Makanah hit the place money yesterday as an each-way single, as the sprinter finished a cracking fourth despite being on the wrong side of the draw at a whopping BSP of 29.15. Richard Fahey's Blue Prince missed out by one place for the each-way double, and we'll start with the first leg in the opening Group 2 Lowther at 13:50 to hopefully get two on the board.

Karl Burke's 2yo filly looked a serious one on debut when sprinting clear of her rivals to score by nearly 4L on her debut and she relished the fast ground at Nottingham with that win.

Timeform had the going as genuinely firm that day and looked fast - clocking three sub-11 second furlongs in the middle part of the race at 2f, 3f, and 4f.

She was pitched straight into the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot just a couple of weeks later with a highly respectable third on the near side - a smart effort considering the turnaround.

Burke had said afterwards she was still a little weak with a bit of maturing to do, so in two months one would hope she's enjoyed the freshen up and time off.

She looks very fast and if the ground stays on the quick side - which is apparently key for her, I can see her zipping along here.

York - 14:25 - Back Dragon Leader

I like punting in the 2yo races and with a big field for the 14:25 Premier Yearlings Sales Race, it's a sizeable old pot with nearly 150k to the winner.

The unbeaten 2-2 Dragon Leader has won both of his starts at Salisbury in a perfect freshman campaign so far.

His debut success was the more impressive of the two as he settled the race in a flash with an excellent burst of acceleration. Soon after he won under a penalty again at the same track, but the race was not so impressive time-wise as they went a crawl, so he did well to overcome those potential hazards.

Again, Timeform had his debut success as a genuine firm ground victory rather than good to firm, so he won't mind it quick today

The 2yo would have learned a lot from his latest performance as he was involved in a battle for the line and showed a real willingness to stick his neck out despite looking green in the final 2f.

He may be only rated in the mid-80s, but he can take another step forward today for trainer Clive Cox, who has fired in 15 2yo winners this term at a strike-rate of 24%.

Drawn in six could be an advantage too over the far side, as it was certainly quicker yesterday with the low numbers.

Ryan Moore rides, and the Betfair Ambassador and gives his assessment here.
