York - 13:50 - Back Makanah
Clearance was another single winner for the column yesterday at an advised 11/43.75, getting up in the nick of time to make five winners from the last six days. We move on to York and can tackle a couple of the bigger fields today - both Extra Place Special races on the Sportsbook with five places.
Makanah is a horse I have backed this term without success but he does like York and has a liking for the pan-flat circuit.
He finished fifth to Bergerac in the race 12 months ago when over the far side drawn in one, but today the draw could work out better with a pitch in 20, and he was arguably a little unlucky in the race when short of room in the closing stages.
Considering he was rated 101 that day, he's dropped down to 96 and has by no means had an arduous campaign with just four starts.
He was thrashed in the Stewards' Cup last time at Goodwood, but conditions were borderline unraceable but he has done okay at Newcastle and York this season.
The 8yo does keep strong company and there's still life in the veteran.
York - 17:20 - Back Blue Prince
Trainer Richard Fahey has said in his Sporting Life column that he is hoping the high draw (18) is okay for Blue Prince, and the 2yo was a drifter this morning from 11/26.50 out to 7/18.00.
Far from being dissuaded by the price now, he represents a good dart each-way here as one of the Extra Place Special races on the Sportsbook so we have the five places running for us.
Blue Prince is improving well judged on his emphatic CD win last time out on Nursery debut - hacking up by nearly 5L.
He clocked an early 10.90 sectional, but the most impressive aspect of the performance was late on, as his final furlong was nearly a full second quicker than any of his rivals.
The 2yo did really well as at one stage he was trapped in his small group on the rail against some naturally zippier types, but his finish was in keeping with his last two starts how he has enjoyed the step up to 6f.
Fahey has landed this race before with back-to-back successes in 2015 and 2016 with a pair of youngsters and Blue Prince can go well despite a hike in the weights 9lb.
