Salisbury - 17:02: Back Wisper
Marcus Tregoning's Wisper was a horse I tipped up earlier in the season at Windsor, June in fact, and I thought she should have got closer to the winner that day when finishing third as she was given far too much to do.
She did travel very well in that and since then she's had two complete blow-outs at Ffos Las and Chester, but the run at the Roodeye was a hot race worth a fair chunk of cash, but once again she blew any sort of chance with a ragged start.
It seems to be a problem with her and it's something of a party trick, but she did finish second at Sandown in August from a mark of 87 and she's a 1lb lower this afternoon - plus the claim of Aidan Keeley - she sneaks into this 0-85 from top weight, and I don't mind backing top weights in handicaps.
She's certainly more poetic than pugilistic given the way she can travel and expect her to be held up again, and the 16/117.00 was far too big this morning on the Sportsbook considering there are nine runners for three-places each-way, although the 16s has since gone and she is now 10/111.00.
The mare does handle soft conditions and Keeley on is more of a positive and Tregoning surprisingly is on the hotlist with 2-9 at 22% in the last month.
Salisbury - 17:35: Back African Star
Between Marcus Tregoning and Sylvester Kirk, the leading trainers going for the title wouldn't have too many sleepless nights about winners coming from both Kirk and Tregoning to trouble the scoreboard, but African Star is of a bit of interest in the closing 1m6f Handicap at 8/19.00.
Jeff Smith the owner breeder, has an affinity with Salisbury racecourse and African Star is one of Smith's that isn't a homebred as the colt is bred by Coolmore and the mare was an Aidan O'Brien runner.
Indeed, he's a full brother to Ontario and given he's by Galileo, the step up to 1m6f here for the first time could be a positive.
He popped up at Lingfield with a shock win at a BSP of 150 but he disappointed on his handicap debut at Newbury next time.
Whether his mark is a poor one - we can't make a snap judgement so early, and the assessor agrees as he runs from 73 again, but this isn't a particularly strong race and he still does have a bit of potential after just three starts.
At 8/19.00 he is double the price of the second favourite Sailing On, whom he beat at Lingfield with Sailing On back on third. They met again at Newbury with both finishing third and fifth in favour of the Eve Johnson Houghton runner, but with the price and the possibility of improving for the 1m6f appeals, and I'll go with him for the three places.
