With 11 runners in the 17:30 Handicap at Newcastle over 1m4f, we get a price of 11/26.50 on Desert Quest against a favourite and winner last time out, and he does look a shade overpriced.
Desert Quest has form tied in with three of his rivals for this race - beating Easter Island, Sprit Of Ash and Super Stars and he travelled well in that race at the turn of the year considering he blew that start and was slowly away.
He won that from 54 and he's only 3lb higher so he's able to stick in this low grade, and ran well to finish second over CD last time. He did fluff his lines at the start again and met trouble in the closing stages while was short of room too.
The selection stays well and acts at the track, and with a beating of three rivals in the book, I am backing him at 11/26.50.
Noble Consort is one with a decent pedigree in the Clipper Logistics silver colours, as his dam is a half-sister to Derby and Arc winner Golden Horn. And with that sire in the pedigree, stamina boxes are ticked.
With four runs over 6f and 7f, he should be getting 1m in the future, but he sticks to 7f tonight.
His three starts in Maiden and Novice company were fairly underwhelming but he did improve on his handicap debut first run last time out finishing third over CD from a mark of 60.
It was also the first time there was a bit of money for the horse as he was sent off 9/25.50 and he could have done with being more nearer the pace stands' side as he was somewhat isolated down the centre.
Drawn in one isn't ideal tonight to remedy that, but it's not a big field and Danny Tudhope should be able to get him settled in off the pace.
Tudhope wouldn't be one of my "go-to" jockeys, but he's on the hotlist at the moment with 7-28 at 25% and over five years at Newcastle shows a profit to level stakes of +15.09.
The horse has also been backed on the Sportsbook from 7/18.00 to his current price of 4/15.00.
