Both of Alan Dudman's horses finished second yesterday at Newmarket, but he landed the place money for his each-way double. He has two picks for the third day of the Craven meeting...

Classic contender for the great man?
Back Mostabshir @ 7/2 in the 15:35 at Newmarket
Two excellent efforts from the two big prices yesterday for the column as both Connemara Coast (BSP of 10.5) and Never Ending (BSP of 37.63) finished second. Both were part of a 149/1 double, and the double would have gone even higher as the latter selection drifted alarmingly.
But we'll take the place part, although nothing would have caught Silver Lady. David Soul would have been very pleased.
We are going down the John Gosden route again today and Mostabshir steps up into class for the Craven for the master trainer, and the 4/1 price looked far more appealing than taking the 15/8 on the Godolphin runner and favourite Mysterious Night.
He was cut from 4/1 into 7/2 this morning.
Mysterious Night brings to the table a wealth of 2yo experience, while Mostabshir has just one start under his belt.
He couldn't have been more impressive on his Kempton debut; where he scored by 4L and done everything right from a wide draw in that run. The 3yo travelled, picked up and quickened. The latter half of his race was quicker on the clock than the first 4f.
Mostabshir does hold a 2,000 Guineas entry and he's a half-brother to the top-level scorer Nazeef.
He also looks a well-balanced individual and I'm confident he'll be able to handle the dip.
Keen to oppose Prepense as the market leader
Back Spring Dawn @ 9/2 in the 16:10 at Newmarket
No secret method with the second selection, and as it's been a good meeting for Charlie Appleby, his debutante Spring Dawn needs including for the second leg, and it's not often we'll get 5/1 on one his newcomers. Although the 5/1 disappeared at the point of filing, and she was cut to 9/2.
Strangely, it's a Fillies' Maiden that has eluded Appleby so far in the previous 10 renewals, but she was bred to make her mark as a juvenile with three 2yo winners in her family.
That fact she didn't race last year suggests she wasn't perhaps as precocious as the pedigree suggested.
She's related to 1m Group 1 winner Territories, and Appleby is 27% win and 48% placed with his 3yos at the track.
Prepense is the market leader at 15/8, but she's worth taking on as she was beaten at 1/4 in a Chester Novice in September last term.
