Horse Racing Tips: Skelton to lead the way with Coral Gold Cup pick in Saturday double

Newbury - 14:50: Back Midnight River

Midnight River's reappearance in the Charlie Hall was a big disappointment at the start of November, going down to a 23L defeat, but he wasn't the only one that ran poorly as Ahoy Senor was last of the quartet. With that run behind him, and a run that looked as though it was very much needed, we should see a better version of Dan Skelton's chaser today.

The Coral Gold Cup will take some winning from 156, but he had a good campaign last term with victories at Cheltenham's January meeting and Aintree - winning in Liverpool from a mark of 151.

He's a strong traveller and this race was earmarked for him months ago considering Harry Skelton said he'll have a run before Newbury.

I do see the greater test of stamina suiting him too and he's an obvious play each-way on the Sportsbook at 17/29.50.

Fairyhouse - 15:10: Back Baltic Bird

The 15:10 at Fairyhouse has five places on the Sportsbook and Baltic Bird in from 123 for handicap debut is one that I am interested each-way.

He earned a Flat rating of 92 in the UK when trained by John Gosden in the UK and got 1m4f well, and while his jumping career has been a bit of a mixed bag, he won very easily at Cork during the summer and also produced a decent effort at Kilbeggan.

His effort at the latter showed that he'll be fine for races around 2m4f and looks as if he will stay today's sort of trip well.

The 4yo disappointed last time when ridden by a conditional and was never a factor, but his mark of 123 appeals on his old Flat form and Keith Donoghue on board now is a plus.
