Horse Racing Tips: Sandown duo to deliver a 24/1 Sportsbook double on Thursday

Trainer Roger Varian has a serious chance in tonight's Sandown Whitsun Cup

Alan Dudman is off to Sandown tonight in pursuit of a winning double, and has a bet in the Whitsun Cup towards the back-end of the card...

Sandown - 18:42 - Back On Point

A splendid card awaits at Sandown on Thursday evening with Derby hero Desert Crown returning to action in the Brigadier Gerard Stakes, but I am backing in the Whitsun Cup and the National Stakes for sprinters at 18:42.

I was surprised to see Charlie Appleby's On Point as big as 7/18.00 this morning, and quite the drift from 9/25.50.

He was Appleby's first 2yo runner of the season when winning at Newmarket on debut earlier this month, and the race was described as a two-and-a-half furlong burn-up by the trainer. He only faced two rivals so the form (as always at Newmarket) is hard to weigh up.

However, both his rivals were well bred and he beat an Amo runner, who subsequently finished second in a big field at York.

The ground was soft and the race produced a weak time-figure, but he's by a sire who has hit the ground running with his first crop with five individual winners.

He could be a Royal Ascot sprinter, as Appleby has said he likes to get two runs into his juveniles before the meeting.

Sandown - 20:12 - Back Yaanaas

Four-year-olds have a good record in the Whitsun Cup at Sandown with five of the last 10 winners coming from that age bracket and Yaanaas looks a horse with plenty to come for Roger Varian.

The only downside here is the form of the yard, as Varian is just 2-32 in the last fortnight at just 6%. For a top yard, that isn't good enough, and the trainer had a progressive horse beaten at a short price last night in second.

Yaanaas didn't race at two or three but he's put together three quick runs this term - winning at Newcastle on debut and subsequently winning under a penalty at Kempton last month.

I liked the way he travelled at Kempton, floating down the centre of the track with 2f to go and won comfortably with an eye-popping 10.73 second sectional at the seventh furlong. Quick for a miler.

He was sent off favourite for his handicap debut last time at Ascot and hit 1.331/3 in-running in the runner-up spot - again travelling well.

That could be a good "sighter" for Ascot in the future, as he has an entry in the Hunt Cup, and he'd have to be near 98 to get in the race.

He was apprentice ridden by Aidan Keeley last time, and Jim Crowley takes over to resume his 100% partnership with the horse.
