Alan Dudman picks his 11/112.00 Sandown double
James Fanshawe went into my bad books this week with Elladonna's win - a horse I'd put up in the column twice, but of course with headgear proved a different proposition on Tuesday, and his Surveyor has to have a big chance in the 18:07 1m Handicap.
She finished second to Spiritual at Leicester as a 2yo last term, and the winner is now rated nearly 100 so that piece of form could translate well to a good handicap mark here. She didn't settle in that race, but the ground was soft and that gives her a good chance of acting on tonight's turf.
A win at Lingfield on her reappearance in April was not as strong a piece of form as her Leicester second, but she handled the late fast sectionals there well despite the typical nature of the race on the All-Weather as she does look a filly that needs to get rolling rather than accelerating.
A defeat last time can be ignored, as it was a messy race at Kempton and she was outpaced there and nudged out late on to go down by nearly 5L.
With Ryan Moore booked she can still win races from 81 and Moore has some good numbers at Sandown and is 2-6 already at the track this term.
With the ton of rain that has been hitting just about everywhere in the last couple of days, trainer Karl Burke should have a bit of confidence with Ice Max up in class tonight, and ground conditions look a must for this progressive horse.
He's improving fast, especially with soft and heavy and has posted two wide margin wins this term at Bath and Musselburgh, so with conditions in mind, he looks a must bet for the Listed Heron Stakes.
His smooth Bath win off 89 was bettered at Musselburgh from a mark of 97 with a personal best - another victory achieved with a lovely way of travelling.
A mark of 109 has and rise of 12lb has ruled him out of handicaps now, so he's well worth his chance up in grade here.
Soft conditions are key, and he wouldn't mind it heavy if more rain hits Sandown.
