Horse Racing Tips: 110/1 Goodwood each-way pair are decent prices for Friday

• Goodwood has two big trial races on Friday

• Understated a drifter from 8/1 to 12/1

• Melakaz can translate AW form to turf

Goodwood - 15:00 - Back Understated

Some very classy very winners are found in the Height Of Fashion Stakes roll of honour, including Snow Fairy back in 2010 and this year's renewal could see a couple jump up from what we've previously seen.

The best in the field on ratings is Heavenly Breath with a 104 rating, but she's had a chance to run that figure and is far more experienced, but I am going with the each-way angle as Understated looks a big price on the Sportsbook at 12/113.00.

She does hold a Group 2 entry in the Ribblesdale and she won a Novice at Windsor 32 days ago in staying fashion, so it's quite a step up in class.

However, she possesses a lot of stamina and that outweighs the form at Windsor which didn't look particularly strong.

Indeed, her debut second at Kempton in January looks the better run, as she finished behind John Gosden's Calmly - who has since left for France.

The switch to quicker ground is an obvious concern, and it's perhaps why the layers want to get her today as she jumped from 8/19.00 to 12/113.00 on the Sportsbook, but she's the most interesting for me as an improver.

Goodwood - 17:20 - Back Melakaz

The Cocked Hat coming up at 16:10 is another of the feature races, and while a Derby trial in name, it's more of a St Leger trial for me and stamina is the forte it seems for the favourite Gregory, but he's 5/61.84 and with seven runners there's no each-way angle, so I prefer the closing 17:20 2m Handicap with 11 in the field.

Melakaz has been winning plenty of races on the All-Weather but has yet to score on turf in five attempts and arrives off the back of a 5L win over the 1m6f at Chelmsford last time.

He was well positioned as the race turned into a dash, and while trying 2m for the first time today, Goodwood is a sharp test and his tactical speed will be of benefit.

His turf runs have been at Nottingham and Haydock most recently, and ran very well in the latter in 0-80 company as he travelled ever so well and hit 3.052/1 in running there from 9/110.00.

Good to firm isn't a problem and he's unexposed as a stayer.
